Manage a spatial database of cartographic base features and related map policy elements that supports a large team of cartographers generating a broad range of print, interactive, and static and dynamic digital products and services in a fast paced, exacting environment with very high standards.
Responsibilities:
* Manage a cartographic geospatial database using a combination of commercial and open source technology, to include
(a) Acquire and evaluate data in a variety of formats from a variety of primarily open sources
(b) Process, attribute, generalize, and integrate data into the database
(c) Maintain consistent, topologically correct data across multiple scales.
Results: a cartographic database that supports print, interactive, and static and dynamic digital map products and is available to all National Geographic cartographic and editorial staff.
* Develop and manage workflows for creating and maintaining a global, multi-scale vector tile set that is compliant with National Geographic map policy.
* Develop tools that allow cartographic and editorial staff to access, display, query, and edit the database to increase the ease and efficiency of database usage.
* Interact with Database Steering Committee and editorial staff to maintain data quality, accuracy, and compliance with National Geographic map policy.
* Support cartographic staff with additional GIS needs - data acquisition, geoprocessing, analysis – and developing more efficient map production workflows.
* Interact with NGP Product and Technology (NGP-DPT) staff and comparable NGS digital product and IT staff to ensure compliance with product/business requirements, development guidelines and infosec best practices.
* Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for integration of map services into digital products and services in coordination with NGP-DPT.
Requirements:
* B.S. or M.S. preferred in Geography, Cartography, GIS, Computer Science, or related field.
* Database management and GIS data processing/analysis experience.
* OpenStreetMap and its schema, ability to edit, query, and extract data. Other sources of open data (Natural Earth, Who's on First, authoritative government sources).
* Vector tile services creation, maintenance and hosting.
* Understanding of geographic principles of scale, projection, topology, generalization.
* Esri suite: desktop (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro), server (ArcGIS Enterprise), and web GIS (ArcGIS Online, Portal for ArcGIS).
* Open source GIS tools such as QGIS.
* Enterprise relational database management systems (PostgreSQL).
* SQL, Python, JavaScript.
