JOB DESCRIPTION
The Associate Producer of Development is a full time creative position with some administrative responsibilities over the development pipeline. The primary purpose of this role is to develop new ideas for television series and specials - this includes writing treatments, designing innovative pitch presentations, researching, casting, and editing in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. This position will also maintain the ''development pipeline'' between the studio and the network, which includes tracking deadlines, budgets & schedules, and competitive projects. As part of this tracking process, the Associate Producer of Development will be responsible for liaising with internal colleagues at Studios and the Channel to facilitate the flow of information regarding projects as they enter and work their way through the development pipeline. This position reports directly to the Director of Development in the New York Office.
Responsibilities:
* Conceptualize, research, and write detailed pitches for bold new television shows and specials that can be pitched to NGC. Pitch process also includes casting: the search for compelling characters for existing ideas, as well as characters around which to build program concepts. AP will interview possible characters and create video presentations and written descriptions of the characters, as directed by Director of Development.
* Develop and sell shows is our business. Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Development, Dev AP must be able to quickly conceive a high volume of top quality ideas, and then turn those ideas into well-written packages/sizzle tapes.
* Design innovative pitch presentations.
* Our job doesn't end with the idea. How we present that idea is just as important. Photoshop, Keynote and Squarespace have become presentation staples, and we will need to continue to innovate new ways to sell our IP.
* Manage pipeline of all development projects from inception through greenlight to ensure that deadlines are met and materials are delivered to appropriate parties.
* Strict organization and management of materials, deadlines, and communication is essential to moving projects forward and keeping the business on track.
* Other duties and responsibilities that arise during the normal course of business, as directed by the VP Production and Development and the Director of Development.
* Every week, Dev AP must also: track competitive programming across scripted and non-scripted television; Scour newspapers, magazines, and new books for ideas and attractive IP.
Requirements:
* Undergraduate Degree required.
* Ability to speak and write both clearly and persuasively when pitching new ideas. AP should be comfortable calling strangers on behalf of Nat Geo when casting or researching. As a representative of National Geographic, every development officer is expected to communicate internally and externally in a professional manner.
* Proficiency in Word, Excel, keynote, and internet research required. Some editing and graphic design experience preferred. Willingness to learn new programs and skills as requested by managers is also a must.
* Out of the box, creative thinking required on a daily basis.
