JOB DESCRIPTION
The Associate Photo Editor will work with photo editors, photographers, writers, editors, and designers to research and edit imagery that combines rich journalism with powerful visual storytelling for National Geographic. The position requires a sophisticated visual aesthetic, strong editing skills, and an ability to work creatively and efficiently. The Associate Photo Editor will research imagery, pitch story ideas, find photographic talent, produce stories, and manage the image workflow.
Responsibilities:
• Research and pitch ideas, edit images, license stock photography content for National Geographic media across all platforms
• Collaborate across teams – print, digital, mobile, video, channel, and podcasts
• Work alongside photo editors, text editors, captions writers, designers and pre-press team
• Use stock and original photography that is visually compelling for National Geographic
• Ensure that projects are well managed, and that budgets and deadlines are met
• Coordinate and maintain image workflow process for all assets, from submission to publication
• Ensure caption information is gathered and disseminated; verify credit line; archive and transmit images; verify color correction when applicable; check image veracity when in question and make images available for broader use across platforms
• Potentially seek and recruit photographers and work directly with assigned photographers, providing production and field support, securing visas, permits, releases, letters of introduction and specialized equipment
Requirements:
• Experience with documentary visual storytelling; knowledge of photography business; great visual taste
• Experience with photo research, licensing directly from photographers as well as from wire services
• Understanding of photography, videography, and mobile storytelling
• Understanding of the editorial process from pitch to completion
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office; Photoshop, Media Pro, Premiere, Filemaker, Excel
• Ability to manage and communicate with many creative minds, personalities, and processes
• Ability to collaborate across departments (photo, video, mobile, podcasts, social, communications)
• Ability to plan and execute stories in a timely manner and meet expectations
• Ability to manage multiple stories at once
• Experience managing deliverables and asset information
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Self-motivated and resourceful, with the ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgement
