JOB DESCRIPTION
The Associate Photo Editor, Departments will work with photographers, writers, editors, and designers to research and produce imagery that combines rich journalism with powerful short-form visual storytelling for National Geographic and Traveler magazines and translating content to the web and social media. The position requires a sophisticated visual aesthetic, strong editing skills, and the flexibility to work with ideas and photographers in the studio or on location. They will research imagery, pitch story ideas, find photographic talent and produced projects and manage the image workflow.
Responsibilities:
• Research and pitch ideas, edit images, license stock photography content for National Geographic magazine, Traveler magazine for the Departments section and short form features.
• Submit story ideas for both front of the book (FOB) and for short-form features in the magazine that can be published in print and online.
• Source visual content for Proof section of National Geographic magazine and for short-form feature stories.
• Publish across all platforms.
• Work with text editors, captions writers, designers and pre-press team.
• Create budgets and monitor budgets for assignment photography in the departments section of the National Geographic magazine.
• Seek and recruit photographers and work directly with assigned photographers, providing production and field support, secures visas, permits, releases, letters of introduction and specialized equipment.
• Use original photography that is visually compelling for National Geographic and Traveler front of the book and short form features.
• Ensure that projects are well managed, budgets and deadlines are met.
• Coordinate and maintain image workflow process for all FOB materials, from submission to publication.
• Ensure caption information is gathered and disseminated, verify credit lines, archives and transmit images and verify color correction, image veracity is verified and made available for broader use across platforms, releases are filed and compliance obligations are met.
• Work with AR/VR team to create on special projects involving coding and user experiences.
• Ensure brand relevant special content is created at the highest standards
Qualifications:
• Bachelors degree in Photography, Journalism, Media Studies, or a visual arts or media related field is required.
• At least 1 to 3 years of experience
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; Photoshop, Media Pro, Premiere, Filemaker, Excel
• Experience with short form documentary visual storytelling; knowledge of photography business; great visual taste. Video production and editing.
