JOB DESCRIPTION
The Editor, Graphics & Maps is responsible for managing and coordinating research activities for maps, graphics, interactives, and artwork published in National Geographic across platforms. This includes managing freelance maps and graphics researchers working for the department; developing and maintaining relationships with outside experts; evaluating and acquiring authoritative datasets; and editing, researching, documenting, and ensuring the accuracy of published maps, graphics, and artwork.
Responsibilities:
Manage research efforts for long-form NGM/Digital maps and graphics
• Coordinate freelance researchers used by maps and graphics staff.
• Work with directors and graphics editors on research assignments for specific stories.
• Coordinate fact-checking activities with NGM research department.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with expects and sources.
• Recruit and train new researchers as needed.
• Monitor and edit maps, graphics, and visualizations during the development and production process.
Manage process for short-form NGM maps and graphics
• Compile and present ideas from staff and freelance researchers.
• Present ideas to relevant teams.
• Coordinate assignment and execution of approved ideas with graphics staff and editors.
Research and report for NGM/Digital long- and short-form maps and graphics
• Perform research, find and communicate with experts, identify and acquire authoritative spatial and non-spatial datasets.
• Compile, organize, and deliver research materials to graphics editors on assigned stories.
• Write and edit copy related to maps and graphics pieces.
Perform pre-publication editorial review of maps and graphics
• Verify factual information as presented.
• Confirm source data is appropriately and correctly represented.
• Review style for consistency and where relevant compliance with NG map policy.
• Work with staff and freelancers to ensure changes and corrections are implemented properly prior to publication.
Requirements:
• Bachelors degree or equivalent experience.
• At least five years of editorial or research experience.
• Familiarity with NG core topics, such as archaeology, geography, cultures, environment, space, adventure, and natural history.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to concisely explain a problem and to articulate a solution.
• Management and people skills to deal positively and productively with a wide range of personalities.
• Ability to pitch and defend ideas to senior editorial staff.
• Ability to grasp and critically evaluate new subject matter quickly.
• Familiarity with software and websites used in editorial and research activities (e.g., MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, search and index services).
• Sound journalistic judgment and the ability to balance accuracy with compelling narrative and visual storytelling.
• Curiosity about topics covered in the NGP products.
• Superior organization and the ability to budget time and handle several tasks simultaneously under the pressure of tight deadlines.
