Position Summary:
The Director of Business Communications is responsible for proactive public relations strategy and communication for the club's business, government affairs, marketing, sales, non-baseball events, and community outreach as well as the Marlins Foundation. The person in this position identifies strategies, ideas, content and approaches that will positively promote the organization. The Director will plan and implement media outreach, and establish and strengthen authentic connections with media outlets and audiences locally and nationally.
Essential Functions:
• Devise, create and develop strategies, content, ideas, approaches for club's non-baseball initiatives
• Serve as primary contact for all non-baseball media requests, managing daily communications responsibilities and serving as a club spokesperson
• Coordinate with various internal departments for appropriate communication plans for non-baseball events.
• Advise on overall organization Public Relations strategy
• Assist in shaping the brand, image and overall awareness of the Miami Marlins organization
• Work to ensure the timely distribution of key organizational information, identifying proper local and national media/outlets to pitch stories and narratives
• Produce news releases; assist in generating feature content, video and other unique coverage for Marlins' non-baseball initiatives
• Direct and coordinate news conferences and related media operations for non-baseball events at Marlins Park
• Interaction with club executives and ownership as well as government officials
• Monitor public and industry trends and how they might affect the organization
• Special projects as assigned
Qualifications and Requirements
• Strong media relations and communications background
• Experience working on complex issues that require thoughtful analysis and high-level planning
• Leadership to create strategies to drive and enhance the Marlins' business narrative
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Exceptional grammatical skills, as well as knowledge of baseball terminology
• Flexible, proactive and able to respond and adapt to a rapid-paced environment
• Relationships with local and national non-sports media outlets with contacts in the local South Florida media
• Self-motivated with ability to manage multiple projects, both short-term and long-term
• Highly collaborative with ability to work in a team environment
• Strong attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills
• Knowledge of social media platforms
• Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred
• Knowledge of Adobe programs and platforms, including InDesign and Photoshop a plus; • Photography experience a plus
• Ability to work long hours, weekends and game nights if necessary.
Suggested Education & Experience Guidelines:
• Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Business Administration or related field
• At least seven (7) years professional work experience (business/corporate communications and/or public affairs)
