Mar Vista Entertainment is a fast-growing, full-service independent entertainment studio with a mission to produce, acquire, and distribute premium film and television programming worldwide. Mar Vista seeks a talented and highly-motivated lawyer to add to its business and legal affairs department. This new position will report to the SVP of Business & Legal Affairs and will structure deals, negotiate and draft agreements, and handle business relationships related to a variety of Mar Vista's business areas.
This position will encompass both business and legal affairs. The successful candidate will be a skilled legal tactician able to handle complex negotiations through to final execution of agreements, with a minimal amount of input/supervision. A key feature to success in this position will be the ability to multi-task and think quickly and decisively in a quick moving business environment.
Responsibilities:
Negotiate, structure and draft agreements required for development and production of motion pictures for release in all media, including underlying rights, talent agreements, executive producer agreements, development agreements with major US broadcasters (Hallmark, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon), and co-production agreements with both domestic and international production partners.
Draft acquisition agreements for films and series from outside producers and negotiate to final execution.
Draft and negotiate to final execution production services agreements for non-US productions.
Establish and maintain familiarity with the requirements of, and relationships with, all the major entertainment guilds (WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, etc).
Oversee and contribute to international rights licensing agreements negotiated by Mar Vista's distribution department.
Develop and maintain relationships at major talent agencies, networks, law firms, financiers, production companies and other relevant industry contacts.
Assist training paralegals and junior attorneys.
Requirements:
Juris Doctor degree and member in good standing of the California bar.
At least 2 to 5 years combined experience as a practicing entertainment attorney at a law firm or in-house, with industry relationships with agents, talent, networks and producers. Studio and/or network experience, a plus.
Possess excellent negotiating, drafting, analytical, interpersonal, organizational, prioritizing and time management skills in a high-volume environment, and proven ability to lead negotiations with agencies, networks, and other industry partners.
Possess extensive knowledge of the entertainment industry including: high level talent agreements relating to both television and motion picture development and production, guild/union and non-union labor and employment law issues relating to productions; intellectual property law; risk management issues, rights of publicity/privacy issues.
Experience in Canadian production service and content deals, a plus.
Experience in television movies, a plus.
Experience in structuring and drafting agreements for a variety of content types.
Understanding of tax incentives and procedures associated with claiming government tax incentives, both domestic and international, with an emphasis on Canada.
Understanding of both acquisition and international rights licensing agreements.
Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team; demonstrating good judgement.
Self-starter with the ability to navigate and partner with internal and external stakeholders and executives; understanding the big picture and business as a whole.
