Part Time Job
Title: Benefits Specialist (Part-Time)
Department: Human Resources
Reports To: Director, Benefits & Wellness
Status: Part-Time; Non-Exempt (approx. 25-30 hours a week)
Position Summary:
The Benefits Specialist will support the day to day administration of all benefit related matters, including employee inquires, elections, transactions, benefit projects, programs and compliance. This position will be a subject matter expert on absence management and will administer the leave of absence policies and procedures for the organization.
Position Responsibilities:
• Coordinate disability and leaves of absence for all staff, beginning with the initial request through their return-to-work. Administers New Parent Programs.
• Subject matter expert on employee benefit issues: responds to employee inquires; claims assistance; and compliance with required notices, paperwork and administration.
• Deliver high level customer service to employees, colleagues and external partners by providing timely and accurate responses to requests and inquires.
• Identify trends in employee questions and feedback; proactively look for opportunities to improve the employee experience.
• Audit, reconcile and pay monthly insurance statements and premiums.
• Administer required reporting and ensure compliance of city and federal mandates (ex. SF HCSO).
• Administer additional benefit programs, such as Commuter Benefits and Flexible Spending
• Support Wellness Program initiatives and logistics
• Partner with consultants, vendors, brokers and carriers to optimize benefit plans and programs.
• Lead benefit orientations and support new hire onboarding.
• Ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws, including required notice distribution, non-discrimination testing, internal reviews of benefits plans & deductions
• Continuously research and communicate changes and updates to benefits and regulations.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree required
• Minimum 3-5 years in Human Resources with at least 3 years focusing on employee benefits
• Knowledge of employee benefits programs and the relevant laws and regulations that govern them, including medical, dental, vision, life, short and long term disability, COBRA, ERISA, flexible spending accounts and retiree benefits. Experience with international benefits a plus.
• Ability to interpret the various health or disability plans and associated documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate complex benefit concepts in an understanding and empathetic manner.
• Ability to handle confidential matters and information with discretion and diplomacy.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office with an emphasis in Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher.
• Prioritize daily issues, tasks and projects in a faced-paced environment.
• Comfortable working independently; self-starter with a strong work ethic and sense of urgency.
• Experience with Workday Preferred.
• Bi-lingual (Spanish) a plus.
