Full Time Job
Job Title: Director, Media Relations
Department: Media Relations
Reports to: Vice President, Marketing & Communications
Manages: 5 full-time staff and 5 seasonal interns
Position Summary: The Director, Media Relations oversees all Lakers media relations. This position is responsible for conceptualizing a strategic media plan, working with media relations staff to executive, and evaluating its effectiveness at the end of each season. It is also responsible for fostering an open, collaborative, transparent environment for media relations staff. It is key that this position work closely with the marketing department to achieve business goals.
Essential Functions (Duties & Responsibilities**):
• Develop short- and long-term strategic media plan for Lakers
• Work closely with marketing department to integrate digital into media plan
• Oversee and manage department of 4 full-time staff and 5 seasonal interns
• Train, coach, set goals and design incentives for staff to accomplish all objectives
• Conduct weekly meetings with staff to ensure departmental transparency
• Make upcoming media calendar available to help staff anticipate Lakers needs
• Seek opportunities that promote growth and learning and that foster department & company-wide integration, collaboration and efficiency
• Write quotes and statements on behalf of the organization, including for ownership, President, General Manager and Head Coaches
• Write press releases, as well as edit and approve press releases written by staff
• Plan, arrange and execute press conferences
• Arrange interviews, appearances and photo shoots for players, coaches and staff
• Oversee and manage compliance with NBA policies, including post-practice, post-game and pre game media availabilities
• Oversee final responsibility for all publications, including game notes, media guides, yearbook and magazine
• Answer inquiries from local, national and international media
• Manage relationships with NBA league office and various other organizations
• Develop and manage relationships with player representatives (agents, managers, publicists, etc.)
• Plan and execute both long-term and short-term PR plans and initiatives
• Plan and execute various media events, such as annual Media Day, Draft Night, etc.
• Pitch story ideas to media to generate positive publicity
• Oversee game-night media needs, including credentials, seating charts, photo charts, etc.
**Responsibilities subject to change based on organizational needs and direction from management.
Education
(Required/ Preferred): Bachelor's degree (required)
Previous experience: A minimum of ten (10 ) years working in sports media relations
Technology Capabilities: Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint & Windows)
Knowledge, skills, abilities:
• Deep knowledge of Lakers team and history
• A passion for basketball and professional sports, with an understanding of other sport cycles and operations
• Ability to operate at the speed of the 24-hr news cycle
• Broad knowledge and experience dealing with integrated communications approach
• Proven experience successfully managing rapid response communications efforts
• Possess strong relationships with local, regional and national media, and exceptional client relationship management skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all levels within the team, NBA, media and other high level outside contacts
• Strong presentation skills
• Excellent writing skills with an eye for grammar, spelling, and thoughtful story creation
• Outstanding organizational and leadership skills
• Exceptional on-scene problem solving – ability to make tough, quality decisions in a fast-paced and stressful environment, always putting the Lakers organization's goals first
• Demonstrated ability to present the utmost professionalism and highest ethical code
• Previous experience working with celebrities or professional sports players
Location: El Segundo (offices M-F), downtown Los Angeles (Staples Center for Laker home games), many away games, and other occasional off-site events
Travel: To up to 75% of away games
