Gaming Reporter (MMJ)
The KTLA 5 News gaming reporter is responsible for reporting, writing, producing and editing daily news coverage centered on video games, mobile gaming, esports and industry news. Coverage may also include other forms of gaming, such as pinball, board games, etc. Stories should be adaptable for different platforms, including television newscasts, Twitch, YouTube and print stories on KTLA.com.
He or she will be responsible for accurate reporting, submitting ideas for news stories, covering news stories assigned by management and reporting live when needed, including on streaming services such as Twitch and Mixer. The gaming reporter must be able to describe events happening during live broadcasts, integrating factual information in a compelling storytelling style. He or she will shoot and edit stories for broadcast news, host hours-long streaming sessions and develop online franchises focused on hardware, esports, developer updates, reviews, unboxings, ''let's play,'' retro gaming, etc.
The gaming reporter will represent the station in various projects designed to promote and enhance the station's image in the community. He or she will be available to appear at community events, speaking engagements, promotions, and other KTLA functions, and as such, represent KTLA to the public. The gaming reporter will develop community contacts and a network of news sources.
The candidate must be comfortable with technology, as he or she will assist with video live streams and also create, edit and post video clips. Experience with non-linear video editing is preferred. Knowledge of Photoshop is preferred. Experience with Final Cut Pro is a plus.
Requirements: Previous experience in a newsroom, especially in local television news, is preferred. As is on-camera experience. Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience is preferred. Top candidates should have a mastery of journalism, broadcast communication, writing, video editing and organizational skills. The candidate must take direction and feedback well. He or she should be naturally inquisitive and a quick learner. An expertise in the gaming world is a must, especially when it comes to cultural issues such as representation in gaming, gamergate and toxicity. Candidates should be comfortable on all related digital platforms, including gaming subreddits, Twitch, Mixer, Discord and Steam. The individual must be able to work various shifts and times, including early mornings, nights and weekends.
