Job title: Digital News Producer (temp/part-time)
Department: News
Reports to: Executive producer, digital
The digital news producer is responsible for writing and reporting breaking and developing news stories on KTLA.com, KTLA 5 mobile apps and social media. She/he must have excellent news judgment, a strong sense of what's important to Southern Californians, and the ability to report and write news stories accurately, clearly and quickly.
The producer will have a comprehensive knowledge of reporting, sourcing, transparency and journalism ethics, as well as AP Style. He/she will also be detail-oriented, organized and able to prioritize stories and duties and to multitask comfortably under tight deadlines. She or he must be able to follow directions, perform duties, work well with others and make independent decisions.
Crucially, the producer must be able to write concise stories that put the most interesting, important details up top and are easily readable for our audience. Producers must be their own copy editors, producing stories and social posts that employ AP Style and are free of typos, grammatical errors and spelling/punctuation mistakes.
The applicant must be able to integrate digital content with broadcast coverage and communicate effectively with the assignment desk, show producers and on-air reporters.
The candidate must be comfortable with digital technology, as she or he will manage video live streams and also create, edit and post video clips from newscasts and other raw feeds. Experience with nonlinear video editing and web publishing systems is preferred. Experience with Final Cut Pro is a plus. Knowledge of Photoshop is preferred.
Familiarity and comfort with Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are required, and the candidate should be able to think creatively about social posts, and must understand how social media is a essential to a news organization. The producer should also be willing to experiment and follow new developments in social media.
Requirements: Previous experience in a local newsroom, especially on a digital platform or in local television news, is strongly preferred. Those with primarily print/newspaper experience must demonstrate that they can respond to breaking news with speed, writing and juggling multiple stories throughout the day and producing clean copy without the support of a copy editor. The ability to continually update and rewrite stories with the newest information - while promptly posting updates on the station's social media accounts - is a must. Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in print writing required. The candidate must have excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written. This position requires being flexible with scheduling from week to week, and the individual must be able to work various shifts and times, including nights, weekends, and early mornings.
