KLRU, Austin's PBS station, seeks a Digital Media Engineer to provide engineering expertise regarding technology, products, and solutions that focus on content processing, content management, and digital distribution. Key to this position is the ability to understand underlying principles of broadcast and IT broadcast related computer/server systems that are vital to supporting the operation of the station.
The ideal candidate will have strong video, audio and metadata engineering skills and thorough familiarity with professional broadcast video/audio. A high degree of computer literacy is also required. The candidate must also be detail-oriented and must have good viewing, listening, problem-solving and communication skills (both oral and written). The candidate should show strong initiative and should be comfortable both with configuring and using software and hardware, and with interacting with clients and vendors. Candidate must also be flexible with hours. Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Install, configure, maintain and support technical infrastructure necessary to create, manage, and distribute media content across multiple platforms, digital environments and content distribution partners.
• Perform system level troubleshooting of technical facilities, including but not limited to non-linear editing systems, cameras, video switchers, videotape recorders, other production equipment, transmitter, master control, servers, and applications.
• Install, operate and test a wide variety of video, audio and metadata applications running on both hardware and software.
• Install, configure, test, optimize, and repair broadcast and IT equipment and systems.
• Investigate, test, and present technology that will enhance workflows and ensure reliability, especially in emerging content delivery models.
• Fully document new systems and procedures.
• Identify, prioritize, resolve, document and communicate work-flow gap and technical/operational issues and develop solutions to improve stability, reliability and cost-effectiveness of technological operations.
• Must be able to estimate problem resolution times independently or collaboratively.
• Manage vendors by monitoring performance, providing feedback, and monitoring new projects.
• Monitor the technical quality of all KLRU television operations
• Insure that proper records of maintenance activities are kept.
• Monitor the station's adherence to all FCC rules and regulations and ensure proper retention of required files.
• Maintain flexible work hours to handle technical & operational emergencies.
• Interpret and implement instructions and requests from producers, directors and other colleagues.
• Provide support for KLRU TV Productions and assess support effectiveness and efficiency across production systems.
• Communicate complex technology topics to wide audiences, including executive management.
• Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills required:
• At least 10 years work experience in the video/audio engineering field. A strong preference for digital media experience.
• Formal training in the field of broadcast engineering is required
• Must be highly computer literate, showing solid proficiency in Apple, Microsoft, and Cisco systems.
• Comprehensive knowledge of broadcast video technology and workflows, audio, metadata, and post-production environment with experience in emerging content delivery models.
• Posses good understanding of video and audio content and be able to evaluate and classify defects in video or audio program material, and understand different classes of viewer level.
• Possess solid knowledge of codecs, testing and evaluation procedures.
• Possess a high degree of computer skills, including the ability to work with untested software.
• Knowledge of the operation, repair and maintenance of television and IT equipment
• Extensive experience with HDTV and major audio and video file formats.
• Must be detail oriented, able to successfully multi-task, self-directed, with proven ability to prioritize tasks.
• Must have excellent problem-solving skills and be able to analyze potential solutions for economic costs as well as purely technical usefulness.
• Must have excellent eyesight and hearing, and the ability to qualitatively grade and classify video and audio content.
• Strong interpersonal, communications and presentation skills.
Working Conditions/Environment:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule and be able to be present at events or shoots that are scheduled outside the normal hours.
• Must be able to work under the pressure of deadlines on multiple projects
• May be required to work or be present at events outside of normal work day
• Must be able to monitor and evaluate audio/video product quality, and handle other hands-on duties when necessary
Education Requirements:
Bachelors degree in engineering or related field. SBE certification is a plus.
