Web Producer
Are you ready to tell the stories of the innovative, quirky, progressive, woke and wild nuances of life in Seattle to the region and the world?
We are a small website with a mighty reach. Our stories are shared on MSN, SFGATE and across the entire Hearst platforms of Chron.com, MySA.com and more.
We produce digital-only content, from engaging headlines that get people to our stories, to a visual experience on the site. We recognize that people are visual, and photos are key, that video is a great tool for understanding something, and that our words are the glue that holds it all together.
If you can spot a story that feels authentic to the Pacific Northwest and write about, using a fresh and witty voice, while respecting objective journalism, legal issues, and copyrights, you may be perfect for this role.
If you post to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for work, know how to live stream anything and how to speak in a brand voice to different audiences, you may be perfect for this role.
If you can bust out breaking news quickly and accurately, while simultaneously monitoring trends on Tweetdeck, Chartbeat and SocialFlow, edit a video on your phone, and chat with your boss via Slack – and do it all with a smile – you may be perfect for this role.
We are looking for a vibrant, intelligent, and energetic writer/homepage curator to work a schedule that includes weekends and/or nights, curating and creating content for Seattle P-I. The ideal candidate will proactively self-assign stories that are on the verge of going viral; an idea generator with strong social roots. He or she should be able to create three to four stories a day while managing the flow of content from the rest of the team onto the homepage and keeping a steady stream of Facebook and Twitter posts for that content as well.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
• Create daily stories and photo galleries, curate the homepage, and update social media for SeattlePI.com.
• Monitor trending topics from social media to inform editorial decisions.
• Package items from third party content sources and maximize engagement using related links, photo galleries and videos.
• Bring fresh ideas to daily content creation and social media promotion.
• Edit and publish daily stories and photo galleries from peers and freelancers.
• Work with the Seattle P-I editors to fill the daily and long lead editorial calendar.
Desired Skills
and Experience:
• BA or master's degree in Journalism or equivalent work experience.
• Impeccable grammar and AP writing skills.
• Innate sense of what clicks and what will be trending later in the day.
• Solid organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent news judgment for national news of interest to Seattle.
• Familiar with SEO best practices.
• Basic knowledge of web analytics and how story performance is tied to content.
• Social media native familiar with algorithms, audiences, and insight.
• Enthusiastic, creative, and eager to learn.
• Basic video editing skills.
• Team player who works collaboratively.
• Understanding of media law and copyrights.
• Energetic, proactive, creative, and innovative approaches to storytelling.
This is a full-time position based in Seattle.
