The Houston Chronicle is looking for a versatile, driven reporter to cover suburban schools in and around the fourth-largest city in the country. Greater Houston is home to more than 30 school districts, including some of the largest in the state. Public education is one of the most important beats in Texas and this reporter will be competing against some of the best journalists in the state.
We are looking for an experienced, self-starter who can identify trends, connect local schools to the national education discussion, and decipher Texas' complex school finance and accountability laws. Coverage will include night school board meetings but will require stories that go beyond the boardroom to explain to readers who and what are driving those decisions.
This reporter will be expected to juggle daily stories with short-, medium- and long-term enterprise work that makes a difference. Other expectations include getting the news first, capturing the digital footprint on a story within minutes, developing iterative stories online as reporting warrants, all while producing a story for print. Students, parents, and taxpayers should be at the heart of every story, and our readers are interested in what is happening on campus inside and outside of the classroom. Fluency in Spanish is preferred. Some data reporting experience is desirable. The successful applicant will be adept at mining social media for sources and ideas, as well as sharing stories.
