Seattle P-I Reporter/Producer
The Seattle P-I is Seattle's longest-lived newspaper, now in its 158th year serving the region. As we always have, we aim to cover the news that impacts Seattleites and the many communities across the Pacific Northwest. Since going all-digital in 2009, we've found new and exciting ways to tell those stories and we're looking for a new reporter/producer to join the team and help us continue that work.
The P-I seeks an energetic, self-driven reporter/producer to cover a variety of issues in the city and region as part of our small, hardworking newsroom. A strong candidate would have experience covering a variety of beats, and a passion for finding fresh angles on stories already being told by other outlets. You should be well-versed in the use of social media not only for promoting your work, but also for finding sources or ideas for other stories. Most importantly, we are a digital news organization, so you should be ready to operate in that environment: You must turn stories quickly, pivot from one thing to the next on short notice, and use a broad array of skills to produce top quality stories. The work is eclectic, diverse, fun, and engaging, just like your writing.
Specific responsibilities:
• Pitch, write and publish multiple stories a day and fully produce them with SEO best practices, captivating headlines, engaging social media promotion, embedded interactives, and visual media.
• Create photo galleries and videos for Seattlepi.com.
• Monitor trending topics through social media and other platforms to inform editorial decisions.
• Proactively self-assign stories that are on the verge of going viral.
• Package items from third-party content sources and maximize engagement using related links, photo galleries and videos.
• Bring fresh ideas to daily content creation and social media promotion.
• Work with Seattle P-I editors to fill the daily and long lead editorial calendar.
Desired skills and experience:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent experience.
• 2 years' experience as a digital content producer.
• Impeccable grammar.
• Innate sense of what clicks and what will be trending later in the day.
• Fresh, brilliant AP writing style with a comfort of doing first-person pieces, writing about experience, and covering pop culture, travel, food, real estate, entertainment, Seattle history and much more.
• Solid organizational and time management skills.
• Strong knowledge of the Pacific Northwest region.
• Team player who works collaboratively.
• Ability to work a schedule that includes weekends and/or nights as needed.
• Photo and video editing experience.
• Background in buzzy news.
Bonus points if you have skills in data analysis, enterprise storytelling, and use of analytics software.
This is a full-time position based in Seattle.
