Deputy Editorial Page Editor, San Francisco Chronicle
Tired of bad takes on the internet? Help us put out some good ones We're trying to reinvent local opinion journalism for the digital age. In your capacity as Deputy, you'll help shape a vision for the future of the Bay Area and think of new ways to harness The Chronicle's bully pulpit to make that vision a reality. You'll edit daily editorials and op-eds and be deeply involved in the editorial board's endorsement process, interviewing candidates and deciding who should stay and who should go. You'll discover diverse new voices and help get them a start in the world of journalism. You'll also help craft ambitious enterprise journalism projects designed to make an impact. If and when the mood strikes you, there will be opportunities to try your turn writing columns as well.
This job requires someone with a diverse skillset. Candidates with a background in either opinion journalism or audience engagement would be nice. But what we need most is someone with the organizational skills of a managing editor and a demonstrated ability to use those skills to turn ideas into action. Your mindset should be digital first, but you should have some familiarity with – or a willingness to master -- the demands of print production. Fluency with the politics of the Bay Area and the subtleties of its disparate and diverse communities will give you an edge.
More of what we're looking for:
• A careful eye and the ability to line edit and fact check with the speed of the web, without sacrificing voice.
• A desire to do serious work with a columnist's flair.
• An understanding of how to use audience data to guide your journalistic decisions.
• At least three years of experience at a daily newspaper, magazine, or web publication.
