Audience Development Producer
The Houston Chronicle is looking for a digital strategist who can confidently handle every aspect of online journalism, from content planning around a major news event, to monitoring and promoting breaking news, to optimizing headlines for Google. You'll join a team of like-minded journalists working hard to tell the story of one of the largest, most diverse cities in the nation.
You'll be responsible for spearheading our Search efforts, working as a player/coach with all levels of the organization to cover the news-- all with the goal of increasing audience and engagement, particularly among local readers.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Monitor and anticipate Google Trends and competition (local broadcast, national news, blogs, social) to identify stories of interest to the Houston Chronicle's audience.
• Assign, curate or optimize content that is packaged and promoted in a way that generates engagement.
• Utilize Google Search Console and SEMRush to stay on top of Search tactics. Work with reporters and editors to build Search equity on important topics.
• Spearhead content planning around big news events, working with department heads and editors to execute on an audience-first strategy.
• Consult on strategy, implement new initiatives or experiments, and create off-platform content when needed.
• Write credible headlines that are optimized for search and social media.
• Evaluate website data trends in an effort to make decisions on both daily content and longer term content development that will grow local traffic.
• Build positive working relationships with newsroom staff and management, work collaboratively, and create new content opportunities.
SKILL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• 2-3 years experience in digital media and journalism. Some past experience with Search Engine Optimization required.
• Understanding of web metrics and analytics tools to measure audience behavior.
• Great headline writer that can take into account SEO and social media.
• Ability to organize time, troubleshoot technical problems, balance audience and journalistic mandates, and make quick decisions with sound editorial judgment.
• Emotional intelligence, collaborative mindset, strong interpersonal skills and grace under pressure
• Comfort with constantly evolving technology, and ability to adapt quickly and bring others along.
• Schedule flexibility (nights, weekends, holidays).
