Assistant Food & Wine Editor, San Francisco Chronicle
The Chronicle food team's mission is to provide the most engaging and influential coverage of the Bay Area's food and drink culture, one of the most dynamic in the country. The team reports with accuracy and depth, tells stories through vivid and entertaining language, and critiques with insight and flair. It breaks news - then pulls off in-depth coverage of trends, people and issues. The team also knows how to make our audiences salivate. A deep love of all things food and drink, and the joy these can bring, informs our coverage.
The Assistant Food Editor is a creative, savvy and experienced journalist who is equally adept at producing high-caliber journalism as they are at unearthing breaking news and writing web-friendly headlines. This position is a model for the modern editor, a hybrid of editing and writing, meant to push the lifestyle group into a solidly digital-first workflow. The editor has an understanding of the fast pace of online news, social media's role in it, and what readers will need - whether it's a guide, an explainer, a news story, or an opinion piece. In this position, you will help define how we eat now.
We're seeking a self-starter with high standards who has excellent communication skills, is comfortable providing and taking feedback, is committed to inclusive journalism, and wants to own the stories that matter most.
What You Will Do
• Edit and manage the breaking news side of the Food team, including scoops about openings and closings.
• Monitor metrics to make decisions on news and service stories.
• Report and write occasional stories about food and restaurants for SFChronicle.com and The San Francisco Chronicle.
• Be a key contributor in story inception and digital innovation, including flagging breaking news stories, suggesting ideas for freelancers, and brainstorming with the design and photography departments.
• Work with some freelance writers on food stories.
• Collaborate with reporters and the rest of the food team on stories.
• Collaborate with the rest of the newsroom for photography, design, and digital publishing schedules.
• Help produce food stories online, including writing and editing for off-platform venues such as social media and newsletters.
What It Will Take To Be Successful
• At least four years of experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment.
• Strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness.
• An understanding of iterative, online news
• Ability to bring a critical eye to stories to quickly edit for reader needs, while keeping the strictest commitment to fairness and accuracy.
• Passion for food and drink.
• Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, social media engagement and other strategies to broaden readership.
• Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment.
Requirements
• This position is full-time.
• The successful candidate must be based in the Bay Area or willing to move to the region.
