Townandcountrymag.com is looking for a superstar News Writer to join its close-knit team based in New York. Reporting to the Digital Director and working closely with our Digital News Editor and Social Media Editor, the News Writer is responsible for writing, pitching, and developing a variety of news and evergreen stories for the site daily.
The ideal candidate has a positive attitude and is up for writing across a wide spectrum of topics and pitching in wherever needed. We're looking for someone who is full of ideas, knows how to write clearly, informatively, and with a digital-friendly voice, and can switch gears between news and evergreen stories with ease.
The writer will be responsible for everything from explainers on what's happening at Mar-a-Lago to minute-by-minute coverage of Eugenie's wedding plans and updates on the next Outlander season, as well as the ability to cover round ups about cocktails, beauty, and travel. This person should be able to mine Google News and analyze site traffic to figure out what news will perform and should also be thinking about second day and reported stories that will contribute to the conversation.
Key responsibilities include:
• Write and produce 3-4 news and evergreen stories a day across several content verticals.
• Pitching longer-lead stories around major news and events.
• Monitoring traffic to understand what works and why, and gearing coverage towards it
Required skills and experience:
• 2-3 years of experience writing lifestyle and news content in a fast-paced digital environment
• Strong writing skills and a talent for quick turn-around on clean, snappy, accurate copy
• Strong reporting and packaging skills
• Experience with social media a plus
• Experience with content management systems, social media tools like SocialFlow, and other basic production resources like Adobe Photoshop
• Familiarity with Google Analytics, Crowdtangle, or similar reporting tools
• Knowledge of SEO and best practices for optimizing content the web, including understanding the difference between a strong search-friendly and social-friendly headline
• Ability to keep day-to-day details organized and interact with multiple team members to take or give direction quickly
