Hearst Magazines is looking for an enterprising features editor to develop, assign, and edit the most impactful journalism and ambitious storytelling across all channels of the Men's Health brand-including web, print, social, and video.
The ideal candidate combines a deep editing and writing background with an affinity for fitness, health, and men's lifestyle trends. They must have 5-7 years of relevant professional experience in editing both print and digital features at a consumer publication.
This position is based in New York and will report to the editor in chief of Men's Health.
Responsibilities:
• Conceive, assign, and edit reported features, profiles, essays, and packages on topics as varied as health, fitness, pop culture, sports, sex and relationships, style and grooming, and technology
• Top-edit select stories and mentor staff writers and editors to foster strong interviewing, editing, and headline-writing
• Surface compelling, untold stories and respond nimbly to cultural conversations with stories that will generate buzz
• Partner closely with the audience development team to understand and act upon analytics to optimize engagement and traffic
• Lead strategy and programming for large-scale projects (editorial, video, etc.) that reach new audiences, engage loyal ones, and make waves in the industry
• Seek, manage, and grow relationships with both established writers and up-and-coming voices
• Collaborate with the video and design teams to create the best visual treatment for each story, and with the social media team to ensure maximum engagement
Requirements:
• At least 5-7 years as an editor, with experience editing both print and digital features
• Editorial background in fitness, health, sports, and/or men's interest
• Strong skill as an editor, tightening and crafting copy
• Good judgment as to what works to drive audience and engagement in digital media
• Must be a collaborator
• Excellent at producing content with digital-friendly language
• Versed in using Facebook Insights, Google Analytics, other data tools
• Open to experimenting with content types and persistent reinvention to create appropriate content for a digital audience
• Bachelor's degree
