Full Time Job
At Hearst Magazines Digital Media you will join a diverse, supportive community of creatives building new experiences in digital media. You will have the opportunity to work with an end-to-end product design team that includes visual design, user experience, user research, prototyping, and presentation/interaction coding for our proprietary media platform. Our designers contribute to an end-to-end design process that allows them to understand and own their work. You will work with diverse editorial brands such as ELLE, Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Women's Health, Runner's World, Esquire, House Beautiful, and more.
Responsibilities
Our current projects include migrating our brands to a new platform, implementing brand redesigns, building features for our custom video player, and adding new features to our proprietary content management system.
You will set the vision and strategy of the End-to-End platform team:
• You will oversee the design of end-to-end flows and experiences that can scale across our platform, collaborating closely with Product and Engineering to define and communicate a strategic vision and high-level objectives.
• You will collaborate with design lead(s) on visionary design thinking for your team.
• You will develop a deep understanding of business lines and goals, as they relate to your teams' products, customers, and key health metrics.
• You will use that knowledge to give informed and useful feedback to project proposals and ongoing product work. You will ensure that team roadmaps are user-centered, data-informed and consider the entire product ecosystem.
• You will help us define our product design process, incorporating user research and accessibility as core tenants of our work.
You will oversee and help create a great team:
• You will help the team(s) define principles, goals, working agreements, and their roles, responsibilities, and priorities.
• You will focus on growing the skills of the designers on your team.
• You will look across product areas to find opportunities for your direct reports.
• You will set clear expectations for output and growth, create processes that help teams become more effective, and help reports move toward career goals that align with those expectations.
• You will create an environment where team members of diverse backgrounds feel empowered and safe to voice their opinions.
You will be responsible for new feature development, feature consolidation, and ongoing maintenance of our platform.
• You will oversee the implementation of new features into our CMS, making sure those decisions are strategic, user-centered, and consider the entire user journey.
• You will oversee the lead designer on the video team and make recommendations on how to scale and staff that team.
• You will allocate resources for brand migration rollout, redesigning brands, and ongoing maintenance projects.
• You will center Accessibility and include it as a core part of the tools we build. This should include advocating for accessibility in product requirements, doing user testing with people with disabilities, and collaborating with our User Researcher on research plans.
You will build relationships across the organization:
• You will build relationships with designers, stakeholders, product managers, engineers, and operations to understand our challenges and aspirations.
• You will work with other team managers and leads to consider the entire product lifecycle, user journey, and multiple business requirements.
• You will work to understand our business and the needs of various stakeholders, including how SEO, data, and advertising goals affect our work.
You will work cross-functionally with other teams:
• You will regularly communicate and build relationships with other managers, balancing the needs and concerns of the Product Design team with those of other departments.
• You will promote a healthy understanding of trust in and appreciation for design processes and outcomes across disciplines.
• You will work with our Design Systems, Tools, User Research, Design Ops, Storytelling and Commerce design teams to make sure that the entire user journey is considered, and the impact of each other's work is understood.
• You will work with the Design Systems team to learn the system and then guide engineers on how to create proper components and help designers to style new features.
Qualifications
• You have 3 years of experience managing or leading a product design team.
• You understand the modern React framework and have knowledge of CSS and HTML.
• You have an understanding and appreciation for the design process, user research, and accessibility.
• You care deeply about creating diverse and inclusive teams and products.
• You have knowledge of accessibility standards (Section 508 Refresh/WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA)-and/or an interest to learn more.
• Experience with implementing accessibility standards into design is strongly preferred.
