Design Director, Veranda
Veranda seeks a design director with 7 to 10 years of professional editorial art direction experience at a magazine or other relevant business. Must love gorgeous homes and gardens, have a passion for architecture and art, a knack for seeing the big picture, and an obsession about the smallest details. This position will act as the visual authority of the staff. The ideal candidate is a proven leader, with the ability to navigate adversity and anticipate issues before they arise, and a deep love and enthusiasm for the work. Must have clear communication skills; a detail-oriented approach, consistent execution, and overall reliability; a deep understanding of and finely honed filter for the brand; Woodwing and Adobe Suite knowledge; and color-correcting experience. NOTE: For consideration, resumes must be submitted in PDF format with salary requirements and a link to a portfolio of work.
Your responsibilities:
• Oversee all design direction: Work with the editor-in-chief to create, define, and execute visual strategy for all content. Ensure that overall look and feel of the brand is appealing to both consumer and advertising audiences.
• Assist in shaping editorial direction: Collaborate with the EIC, deputy editor, and style/market team to generate editorial content mix, relying heavily on brand awareness and brand filter. Work closely with editors to reinforce brand mission through story design.
• Design and oversee production of all covers; design/oversee all pages; art direct photo shoots when needed.
• Manage and mentor members of the shared photo departments and freelance designers. Coach them in all things Veranda; share resources; and help them find solutions when questions and challenges arise.
• Facilitate communication: Help serve as a liaison between editorial, art, and photo departments.
• Ensure consistency of brand design across all sections and platforms.
• Manage pages through production. Assign out text boxes, flow text into layouts (if needed), give concise color-correction instructions, ensuring that all pages are on deadline and on budget.
