Your impact:
Hearst Digital Media is seeking a deputy editor to help guide the daily operations and long-term strategy for one of its fastest-growing food and lifestyle sites: ThePioneerWoman.com. The ideal candidate is a highly organized leader with substantial experience in food and service writing and a strong passion for the brand.
The deputy editor will be involved in almost every part of the daily operations of the site and should be comfortable managing SEO lineups, creating digital packages, line-editing features, planning on-site video, and helping lead a team of senior editors overseeing SEO, social strategy, and e-commerce. This editor will also help coordinate communications with internal and external partners including our Birmingham-based test kitchen, the design and photo departments, print editors, the branded content team, Ree Drummond's team, freelance writers, and many others. This position can be located either in New York City or in Birmingham. What you will do:
• Work with the digital director and senior editors to spearhead an editorial lineup that includes 15 stories daily
• Oversee and manage the site's editorial calendar
• Manage the senior editor, senior lifestyle editor, and a team of freelancers
• Collaborate with Hearst's SEO team, partnerships team, and video team to increase traffic and establish new beats
• Assign and edit (and occasionally write, if needed) stories across multiple content categories
• Oversee the site's features and packages
• Track the daily online conversation around key topics and the site's core and targeted audiences, and pitch and assign ideas for editors and freelancers
• Monitor analytics daily to help grow traffic and engagement across all channels
Who you are:
• At least 7 years writing and editing experience in consumer-oriented digital media
• Strong food and service-journalism background and keen line-editing and digital packaging skills
• Strong knowledge of SEO best practices and proven ability to grow traffic through search
• Experience editing and managing multiple freelancers and staffers
• Proven success growing social media audiences
• Ability to smartly manage a small team and tight deadlines
• Fluency in digital publishing and deep understanding of performance metrics, including tools such as Google Analytics and Chartbeat
• Strong visual and photo research skills
