Company Overview:
Gaumont is seeking a Director of Business and Legal Affairs to join our Team. The ideal candidate will be well established within the industry with a minimum of 5 years of experience working within Business and Legal Affairs in television development and production and television distribution. He/she must be capable of working in a fast pace environment and capable of managing multiple deals simultaneously. This position reports directly to the EVP of Strategy and Head of Business and Legal Affairs and is based in West Hollywood, California.
Responsibilities include:
• Negotiating and drafting agreements for all facets of development, production and distribution, including network, cable and new media license agreements, above-the-line agreements, option and literary purchase agreements, production services agreements, studio facility agreements, assignments, releases, contingent compensation definitions, and other related agreements.
• Negotiating deals to engage above the line talent (writers, producers, directors and voice talent) and below the line talent.
• Managing clearances on one or more shows simultaneously.
• Providing business and legal services to creative executives, production department and show producers.
• Preparing and negotiating releases, talent agreements, chain-of-title memos, and other development and production-related matters.
• Coordinating legal matters with other Gaumont departments, including employment, labor, IP, music, etc., and advise creative executives and productions accordingly.
• Researching and answering inquiries regarding contracts, privacy rights, copyright laws, script clearances, guild requirements, and other legal matters.
• Updating form agreements (e.g. network and other licensing agreements, overall agreements, contingent compensation definitions, and writer-producer agreements).
• Negotiating contracts for international and domestic distribution agreements for Home Video/DVD, EST, VOD, and other distribution channels.
Skills and Knowledge:
• Must have J.D and be a member of the California State Bar.
• Minimum 5-10 years' experience in business and legal affairs within television development and production and minimum 2 years' experience with television distribution agreements.
• Fluency in French strongly preferred.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills in both English and French.
• Strong negotiating and drafting skills.
