Assistant Editor Job Description
Position Title: Assistant Editor
Reporting to: Post Producer
Description of the job: Assembles recorded raw material into a finished product that is suitable for broadcasting. The material may include camera footage, game play video, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and special effects. Creatively brings sight and sound together to tell a cohesive story.
Responsibilities of the Position: To independently edit media into a finished product for distribution.
Specific responsibilities:
Manipulate and edit videos in a way that is invisible to the audience.
Swap in updated and localized motion graphics while keeping frame-accuracy and intent of original edit.
Comfortable with keyframes and animation & copying-pasting attributes.
Emotional storytelling abilities.
Thoroughly conform all edits, checking consistency in timecode/duration/cut points across all versions of the edit.
Trim footage and video segments and put together the sequence of the production.
Organized files, following naming conventions, and clean project management is required.
Creatively bring together music, dialogues, graphics and effects.
Create and export final cuts for delivery to client.
Ensure logical sequencing and smooth running.
Consult with stakeholders from production to the post-production process.
Continuously discover and implement new editing technologies and industry's best practices to maximize efficiency.
Skills needed for the job:
Proven work experience as an assistant or junior video editor.
Solid experience with digital technology and editing software packages (e.g. Avid Media Composer, Lightworks, Premiere, After Effects and Final Cut).
Demonstrable video editing ability with a strong portfolio.
Thorough knowledge of timing, motivation and continuity.
Familiarity with special effects, 3D and compositing.
Creative mind and storytelling skills.
Special Attributes: Story-telling ability, a passion for detail and quality control.
Education: College education or equivalent experience required. BS degree in film studies, cinematography or related field, graduation from a school with a major in art, graphics or related field are desirable. A reel should be available to demonstrate work.
Experience: Three or more years related experience in editing at assistant or junior level.
