Job Summary:
The Transmission team is seeking a Transmission Specialist III to join our team. The Transmission Specialist III is a public representative of the Transmission Department and of ESPN through routine communication and coordination with other departments and with outside service providers and affiliates. This position includes the hands-on operation of satellite, fiber, IP and cellular transport technologies, in a fast-paced ''live'' environment. You will be challenged to leverage your technical skills to solve diverse problems. This position will also manage highly complex, addressable satellite distribution systems for domestic and international ESPN networks, OTT and streaming Networks The Transmission Specialist III is expected to fulfill all primary transmission responsibilities and assume lead responsibilities for specific roles and projects as assigned by the department's management. In this position, special emphasis is placed the advanced operation of highly complex systems and leadership. Assignments will require a high degree of knowledge, competency and an ability to work independently and with self-motivation. He/she will also be responsible for the troubleshooting efforts and timely reporting of all incidents involving Transmission workflows and processes. Performance must be accurate, timely, and with a professional demeanor befitting this role.
Responsibilities:
• The Transmission Specialist III acts as an advanced technical liaison for Transmission business partners including, Remote Operations, Network Control, the Assignment Desk and Affiliate Business Operations.
• Acts as a functional lead operator of Transmission, providing oversight of daily transmission workflow.
• Operation of all conditional access, encryption, and digital compression systems, both domestic and international ESPN networks, ensuring accurate satellite distribution of ESPN programming to all its affiliates.
• Serves as technical liaison with ESPN's commercial affiliates, domestic and international. High Level interface to affiliates experiencing problems or having questions concerning our distribution / encryption systems.
• Quality assurance and trouble-shooting television signals to achieve high-quality video, audio, and data transmission between remote venues and Bristol.
• Signal processing to prepare video, audio, and data content for use in ESPN production facilities, including video level and color adjustment and audio shuffling and level adjustment.
• Closely monitors deviation reports to identify and isolate special and/or systemic problems; participates in post- mortem evaluations and recommends corrective actions.
• Leads special projects and/or operations teams in complex departmental initiatives.
• Works directly with Transmission Management to recommend changes and improvements to policies and standard operating procedures; regularly suggests modifications or improvements to equipment and related technologies.
• Trains and mentors less experienced Specialists in the performance of complex assigned tasks, provides direct feedback to management
• Helps facilitate the implementation, installation and integration of technical systems, equipment and work flows.
Basic Qualifications:
• A minimum of 5 years of Transmission or related broadcast technical operations experience.
• Advanced knowledge of critical transmission, compression, and encryption systems.
• Possesses expertise in the various areas transmission operations, which may include but not limited to Access Control, RF and Fiber transport technologies, PPV or VOD and related software apps.
• Advanced knowledge of Video, Audio, and Data transport standards including, but not limited to: SDI, AES, ASI, JP2000, IP, DTM, SONET, RF, Analog and Digital PSK modulation, DVB-S, and DVB-S2
• Comprehensive experience with integrated automation systems including, but not limited to; Evertz- IRM, Arris compression systems, Nimbravision, Maximo, etc.
• Candidates must have solid computer background (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc...)
• Demonstrated communications and customer service skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-oriented live television environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced Operational Proficiency in one or more then the following:
• Transmission functions, (e.g. setting up, controlling and monitoring the IRM Automation System to transmit or receive all signals related to ESPN's family of networks)
• Access Control functions, e.g., in-depth understanding of various compression systems with a concentration on Motorola and Cisco IRD's (Integrated Receiver / Decoder) technologies.
• DTM Networks e.g. oversight and in-depth understanding of our privately operated fiber network and all ancillary gear associate with fiber signal flow along with troubleshooting, recovery, and reporting techniques
Required Education
• High School Diploma or equivalent technical school graduate
Preferred Education
• Bachelor's Degree or comparable experience in communications, electronics, satellite/antenna or RF theory, compression distribution systems, fiber / optical technology or broadcast television related experience.
