Job Summary:
The Senior Director will oversee all aspects of the team accountable for designing, developing and putting together go-to-market strategies for all digital / non-linear products the ESPN Ad Sales team sells across ESPN apps, .com, social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat), OTT and ESPN magazine. The Senior Director applies ingenuity, creativity, analytical and organizational skills to identify and evaluate ad sales product (video / display / content) strategies and selling tactics. The position develops and inspires a team of integrated marketing professionals who deliver world-class ad sales solutions in fast-growing platforms including mobile, digital video, social across all ESPN sport verticals.
The Senior Director must be fluent in all digital inventory types, digital platforms and the digital buying trends of agencies. This role is responsible for building strong collaborative relationships with ESPN and Walt Disney Company colleagues across many different departments including Programming, Editorial, Technology, Sales and Marketing. The Senior Director is part of the ESPN Platform Ad Sales Strategy, Solutions & Global Operations leadership team within Direct To Consumer & International (DTCI) at The Walt Disney Company.
Responsibilities:
• Overall:
• Lead the ESPN Platform Client Solutions within Platform Ad Sales Strategy, Solutions and Global Operations in developing and marketing new ad sales opportunities and products for ESPN Ad Sales team
• Manage a team of 11 integrated marketing personnel, aligned by digital vertical (Owned & Operated, Data Solutions, Social, Magazine) accountable for all go-to-market ad sales strategies for all digital and non-linear ad sales products
• Understand audience context and content relevance to identify ad sales product / platform capabilities
• Strong, up-to-date command of the breadth and depth of capabilities across the ESPN platform: desktop, mobile, social, magazine, OTT
• Maintain constant knowledge of available/sold opportunities across all relevant platforms, and effectively communicate to all internal groups (Sales, Planning, Inventory, Sport Management, etc.)
• Relationship / Partner Management:
• Work across multiple internal groups - ESPN.com Editorial, Design, Fantasy, Mobile and .com Site/Production, Ad Operations, Asset Management, Business Development, Revenue Operations, and fellow Marketing groups - to brainstorm and deliver integrated marketing solutions
• Work directly with partner leads (Social, Product, Technology, Editorial, Programming) to offer collaborative strategic solutions and workflow for implementation
• Manage senior level relationships with Social partners (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat) to navigate programming strategies and ongoing strategic partnership
• Actively manage ESPN partner expectations as they relate (or not) to internal company goals
• Competency Functions:
• Working knowledge of each sport season, major seasonal tent poles and digital integration into each major sporting period
• Expertise on agency / client buying trends and marketplace issues
• Strong understanding of social platform basics (e.g. Twitter is the most real-time, Instagram Story slides are :15 seconds max, Facebook has a branded content handshake instead of an @tag, etc.)
• Toggle between strategic big picture and minute details (detailed –oriented) to map agency / client needs (and KPIs) to ESPN ad sales product and editorial capabilities
• Communicate digital best practices to Sports Management teams and provide expertise in digital trends, ad serving, measurement, etc.
• Integrated Marketing:
• Oversee the development of ad sales collateral and presentations presenting all ad sales products, programs and capabilities that are available for sale
• Cursory understanding of content production works and how different requests require varying levels of effort and time
• Facilitate and fully engage in all pitch, strategy, and production meetings
• Participate in client and agency sales calls when necessary
• Participate in senior-level digital sales meetings to set priorities and communicate direction to the rest of the integrating marketing organization
• Manage multiple assignments simultaneously in a fast paced environment
• Provide an environment that challenges and rewards the group by cultivating teamwork, creativity, innovation and career growth
Basic Qualifications:
• A minimum of 10 years of experience working for a multinational digital or media company
• 4 years of ad sales digital media / integrated marketing experience from a Digital and Media company
• Experience managing a team 5 employees
• Experience developing and driving digital inventory and capability strategy
• Ability to take calculated risks and decision making
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, organization and attention to detail
• Well organized and detail-oriented. Must be able to stay on top of multiple projects, email threads, and meetings in a given day
• Aptitude for learning and retaining new platform rules and social content trends in a constantly evolving space
• Excellent communication skills both in person, on the phone, and via email; core capability of drafting pitches and identifying potential hurdles / possible solutions before they advance to the next stage.
• Exceptional presentation and public speaking skills
• Creative and conceptual thinker with ability to translate concepts into tactical executions
• Occasional travel required: Bristol, Chicago, Los Angeles
