Job Summary:
The Director, Content Business Operations, will perform work directly related to the servicing of the Content Division and its business, and will serve to establish content strategy alignment through directly negotiating on behalf of ESPN with outside business partners and advising the Division on a wide variety of Content business matters; including those related to the development, production and acquisition of content across a variety of platforms and independently leading other major assignments and initiatives as directed. The position will report to the Vice President, Content Business Operations & Strategy.
Responsibilities:
• This position will be expected to exercise significant independent judgement, discretion, and decision making authority to directly handle the evaluating, structuring, negotiating and implementing of a wide range of Content agreements such as 30 for 30 documentaries, original series for ESPN, and original content deals with league partners, outside production companies, and content providers. In addition to being the lead negotiator and the ongoing supervisor of those deals; will advise executives across the company (including Programming, Affiliate Sales & Marketing, and Legal) throughout all stages of a deal, including to compile and help prioritize the deal points from the various business units, develop, communicate and champion best practices, and at all times to operate in and be a proponent for the best interest of the company.
• Manage business issues concerning original content deals such as: distribution rights and clearance issues that arise in connection with the acquisition and exploitation of content across ESPN's platforms and third party platforms, advising and supporting colleagues and executives on key business issues and rights matters. The position will also recommend methods to track footage usage for reporting purposes
• Establish content strategy alignment for original content across platforms, including for ESPN . Work closely with senior directors and VPs in Content Development to identify new business opportunities; and work collaboratively across the organization, taking the lead to recommend the best content distribution and business growth strategies for each opportunity. Work with Digital/Print strategy leads on identifying strategic ways to produce content and align resources against strategic initiatives to better expand ESPN's audience and revenue opportunities.
• Lead internal business reviews, as assigned, of the Content organization and make clear recommendations to enhance its business positioning and establish best practices.
• Lead the footage licensing efforts for the Content organization, including a staff of (1) one. Work collaboratively with Legal, Programming Rights & Clearances, and across the Content organization to gain align, and establish and implement best practice.
• Ability to perform duties under minimal supervision while exercising discretion and independent judgement to make decisions of major significance to the company
Basic Qualifications:
• Seven (7) years of media/entertainment related business affairs, or related, experience
• Experience assisting with structuring, negotiating and implementing complex deals
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with structuring, negotiating and implementing Content deals (e.g., production, acquisition, distribution, digital, emerging businesses, etc.)
• Superior analytical and writing skills and ability, together with strong business financial and acumen
• Strong negotiation skills, both as an individual and with a team
• Ability to strategize and think creatively; strong problem solving skills required
• Exceptional organizational, prioritization and time management skills with the ability to juggle multiple, high-priority projects, with a keen attention to detail
• Knowledge and understanding of digital media initiatives, platforms, products and services (social networks, distribution models and platforms, etc.) and the entertainment industry generally
• Professional, confident demeanor and a team player
• Must excel in a fast-paced, results-oriented work environment
