Job Summary:
ESPN is seeking a Director, Business Development. The ideal candidate will have at least seven years' experience working as a business development executive in media, sports and/or technology.
At ESPN we deliver content offerings via traditional and digital platforms that delight sports fans around the globe. We move at the speed-of-sports, we exist to delight sports fans, by relentlessly identifying new product offerings or methods of delivery to sports fans, anytime and anyplace they wish to follow their teams or leagues.
Reporting to the VP Business Development this position is located in Bristol, CT or New York City.
Responsibilities:
• Identify and evaluate potential third party opportunities (including complex business development matters in new and emerging businesses) while also fully understanding, supporting and expanding our existing businesses.
• Extensive analytical and modeling skills with the ability to collaborate across a diverse range of stakeholders, including multiple levels of management within ESPN.
• Work with top management of ESPN Business Development and Global Strategy group and relevant internal colleagues (Content, Programming, Technology, Finance, Ad Sales, Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Legal, International.) to develop new business and product initiatives.
• Assess new markets and media landscape, analyze business opportunities, and develop and conduct competitive analysis.
• Directing cross-functional teams and facilitate efforts to build new business strategies, rationalize processes, and identify, qualify and present strategic business issues to top management. This includes: working with Strategy and Finance on business planning and market assessment for ESPN projects, including quantitative models to support business development and value creation efforts and working closely with Ad Sales and other revenue groups to help drive revenues
• Consult regularly with ESPN colleagues regarding how ESPN's business development activities can support their initiatives and businesses
• Be adept at developing and delivering presentations (both in large settings and key stakeholder conference calls) to internal and external parties (including industry panels) regarding ESPN's business development efforts and ESPN's offerings generally.
• Establish and build strategic relationships with executives from potential and established partners
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum of 7 years of extensive business development experience
• Bachelors degree
• Skilled negotiator and commercially focused
• Excellent project management skills
• Ability to manage multiple, time-sensitive projects with competing demands for resources
• Strong ability to comprehend, structure and negotiate complex business agreements,
• Strong business and financial acumen,
• Superior analytical and writing skills
• Strong and effective negotiating skills, including: deep understanding of the traditional media business, internet, new media and interactive platforms and the associated business models
Preferred Qualifications:
• MBA degree or comparable business experience
• Business acumen and ability to read and synthesize various media consumption and marketplace reports;
• Application of business and process-mapping techniques
• Excellent strategic and creative thinking, with particular emphasis on evaluating new opportunities and changing marketplace and media consumption dynamics
• Experience working in a senior capacity in a corporate strategy or business development group/function in a leading media or technology corporation
• Track record in conceptualizing, establishing and building new businesses• • Ability to provide guidance on strategy for developing, offering or acquiring digital media goods and services.
• Superior communication skills with the ability to interact cross-functionally at all organizational levels and externally with business associates and clients, including exceptional organizational, prioritization and time management skills
• Ability to perform duties under minimal supervision while exercising discretion and independent, sound judgment
• Must excel in a fast-paced, results-oriented work environment
• Is excellent at presenting complex information in a formal and clear manner to all levels of employees
• Writes business development proposals, and presents proposals to peers and other executives
• Knowledgeable in traditional media and cutting edge internet and wireless goods and services
• Extensive contacts and experience in the digital space, preferably including media, social media and technology.
