Part Time Job
Job Summary:
The Part Time Assistant Editor, Copy Desk, works with other copy editors in ensuring the overall editorial quality and accuracy of ESPN.com-generated content.
Responsibilities:
• Edit and polish articles (including headlines, captions and link text), check for accuracy, proper grammar, style and appropriateness.
• Working with the Copy Chief and the Senior and General Editors on the Copy Desk, the Associate Editor helps in enforcing standards and consistency in the stories produced by ESPN.com staff, contract writers and freelancers.
• Monitor copy flow and assignments as directed by the head of the copy desk, and conclude each shift with a report/e-mail on the status of stories in the queue or those that are expected to arrive.
• Assistant Editor is a non-managerial position.
• Work shifts may require night and/or weekend duty.
Basic Qualifications:
• Has competence in writing, editing and reporting.
• Has an appreciation of popular culture and contributes to an understanding of the tastes of ESPN's audiences.
• Has news journalism experience and news judgment; understands assigned sport(s) from a journalistic point of view.
• Has a basic understanding of HTML and related web authoring tools and software.
• Strong English grammar and excellent organizational skills, particularly as it applies to grammar and syntax; thorough familiarity with leading newspaper/magazine style guides.
Preferred Qualifications:
• A minimum of 1-2 years of editorial, reporting and/or copy editing experience.
• Familiarity with most major Internet search engines and fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet.
• Strong understanding of major sports, as well as a working knowledge of athletes, coaches, league operations and the like.
Required Education
• High school diploma or GED
Preferred Education
• Bachelor's Degree or higher preferred in Journalism, Communications, English or a related field
