Part Time Associate Editor, Espnw
Job Summary:
The Part Time Associate Editor, espnW assigns, edits and produces features and commentary for espnW and ESPN Digital Storytelling. From generating story ideas to managing writers, from participating internally on editing teams to helping imagine approaches to engage audience, from hands-on experience producing content to an ability to think and act outside traditional media frameworks, this position is vital to the mission of creating the most impactful storytelling and commentary that can live across all ESPN platforms. Projects initiated and driven by this editor will support business initiatives at the company, including efforts to expand audience and broaden our diversity of voices and points of view. Applicants should have proven editing skills.
Responsibilities:
• Own the espnW commentary and athlete-voice space, working closely with writers and editors to bring authentic commentary, including first-person storytelling directly from the athletes to our audience. This editor would pursue, pitch, edit and publish voices pieces primarily for espnW.
• Generate, edit and produce conversation-starting feature stories, issue packages and commentary at the nexus of espnW and ESPN Digital. This editor would contribute to projects that have digital, TV and sales presence.
• Have passion for pursuing storytelling by, for and about women in the sports world and be a force for bringing to life ideas that present the female point of view and women's voices in sports journalism.
• Edit and brainstorm seamlessly across platforms, with an understanding of diverse points of view and how to extend those voices across platforms.
• Discover and nurture new writers, helping them find their voice and authority.
• Create a new network of established, needle-moving commentary writers, and bring them into the espnW fold.
• Offer concrete ideas and knowledge on how to amplify espnW voices across ESPN platforms and off platform, including TV, audio and social.
• Conduct or support assigned production duties, such as posting stories, uploading video or audio using the content management system; submit detailed photo assignments; provide supplemental reporting and occasional fact-checking.
• Participate in ensuring that writing style is consistent with Digital Storytelling editorial policies; edit and enhance copy.
• Support internal and external resources to make Digital Storytelling content compelling and comprehensive.
• Apply fundamental ingenuity, creativity and analytical skills to assignments in espnW and Digital Storytelling.
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum of two years' direct professional editorial and/or reporting experience.
• Has basic editorial judgment, competent writing and editing skills, and is able to balance conflicting priorities and demands.
• Has a basic understanding of web-authoring tools and software, and a familiarity with content management systems.
• Has a basic appreciation of popular culture and contributes to an understanding of the tastes of espnW and ESPN's viewers.
Required Education
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, online/multimedia
