Job Summary:
The Assistant Editor for ESPN International/Americas is a digital media editor and writer who will create, translate and edit original content in English and Spanish, organize and communicate budgets and serve as a liaison among our regional editions. The assistant editor will work to ensure all content meets established ESPN journalistic standards and guidelines.
The Editor will be expected to display solid news judgment, skilled storytelling ability, knowledge of digital practices (including SEO, social platforms and content sharing) and journalistic principals and methods. The Assistant Editor will also work closely with ESPN's digital group and studio production team in Bristol, CT, to produce original stories, audio and video content for the Latin America and U.S. Hispanic audiences, including coverage of soccer, NBA, NFL, MLB and other sports.
The Assistant Editor will help drive the creation of original content focused on storylines of interest to the Latin America and U.S. Hispanic audiences, and will work closely with ESPN's U.S.-based editorial teams to communicate content plans.
The Editor will be skilled in producing content that resonates on multiple digital platforms, including the Web, app and mobile.
The position requires regular, daily communication in Spanish and English with teams across multiple continents and time zones. Strong organizational skills are a must.
Responsibilities:
The Assistant Editor's duties will include:
• The year-round publication and development of written, photo, audio and video content (both originally produced, translated and migrated from ESPN's international sites) for ESPN in the U.S. and the rest of the Americas.
• Creating original bi-lingual content, translating content from Spanish to English and English to Spanish, and monitoring content in the Americas regions to spot stories and trends of interest for the U.S. domestic audience
• Regular communication with ESPN's editorial teams in the Americas.
• Coordinating coverage of breaking news to ensure timeliness and accuracy, understanding reporting protocol and news judgment.
• Lending insights and partnering with ESPN's other editions around the globe.
• Updating regional content plans.
• The Assistant Editor is expected to have exceptional writing, translating, reporting and editing skills. The editor will edit, translate and write content, ensuring it meets established tone, theme, style and consistency requirements. Additionally, the editor will enhance existing material, and work to coordinate comprehensive coverage and breaking news with immediacy and accuracy.
• The Assistant Editor will be a technically savvy consumer of digital and social media, who has a strong knowledge of the Americas and U.S. Hispanic markets.
Basic Qualifications:
• Fluency in web authoring tools, SEO and software: CMS, Photoshop, basic HTML, FTP clients, basic video editing, photo editing, Mac and PC operating systems.
• Fluency in electronic news gathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet.
• Digital journalism experience and strong news judgment; understands assigned sports from a journalistic point of view, and for the Americas and U.S. Hispanic audiences. Understands and protects the ESPN brand across the regions.
• Excellent organizational skills, plus news reporting, writing, translating and editing skills.
• Strong knowledge of the Americas and U.S. Hispanic markets.
• Ability to write and edit in English and Spanish.
Required Education
• HIgh school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education
• Bachelors degree or higher preferred in Journalism, Communications or a related field.
• Typically, recently college graduates or up to two-plus years of editorial experience.
