Assistant Chief Counsel Legal Affairs, National Geographic
Job Summary:

Responsibilities:
• Advise team of lawyers and paralegals on television production and development deals.
• Work hand in hand with business affairs lead to ensure smooth delivery of legal contracts and guidance.
• Handle agreements and resolve legal issues in connection with development, production, licensing, and promotion of television programs for National Geographic.
• Draft, negotiate, and advise on a wide variety of agreements and deals, including content acquisitions, development, and licensing of scripted and documentary programming, theatricals, production, and development agreements for production of original programming.
• Analyze and advise in connection with legal rights and obligations, deal structure, guild agreements, intellectual property matters, claims, clearances, audits, and other matters arising out of the day-to-day operations of the National Geographic channels.
• Address day to day on-set production issues, for both scripted and unscripted programing, and training team to do the same.
• Clients will include such other departments as Business Affairs, Creative, Production, Production Finance, Participations, and Standards and Practices (S&P).
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum 10 years of law firm or in-house experience in television and/or film.
• Extensive experience drafting, interpreting, and negotiating television and feature film production and development deals.
• Experience reviewing pre-broadcast content.
• A strong understanding of guilds and other media labor laws.
• Exceptional organizational, analytical, prioritization, and time management skills with the ability to work under deadlines and execute efficiently against multiple, high-priority projects.
• Ability to perform duties under minimal supervision while exercising discretion and independent, sound judgment. Train direct reports to do the same.
• A professional, confident demeanor and an ability to work well with colleagues and to communicate effectively and positively with clients and all levels of management, including providing counsel to senior level executives.
• Demonstrated ability to problem-solve in a professional, creative, and ethical manner.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, other office-related software, and legal document management systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ideal candidate will have experience in the documentary and nonfiction television and film industry.
• Management experience, specifically leading attorneys or other professional staff.
Required Education
• Law degree from an accredited law school.
• Admitted and in good standing in at least one jurisdiction in the United States (or Registered In-House Counsel)
