Photo Editor - National Geographic
Job Summary:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of experience photo editing for print or digital media preferably with a concentration in books. This position works with the Creative Director to ensure that all photographic content is aligned with Nat Geo Adult brand style and identity and works with the Director of Photography to maintain the National Geographic level of excellence in photography. Must be able to illustrate a variety of topics including photo books, atlases, illustrated reference books, travel guides, how-to guides, narrative non-fiction titles, and various gift books. Will set style and edit own projects. Works closely with editors and designers on each project assigned. Responsible for ensuring that all resources are being used properly regarding photo copyright and licensing. Works with manufacturing to ensure quality color reproduction on all photos being used in the Adult Books products. Continues outreach to photographers, stock agencies, and communication with NG Image Collection. Must be able to communicate effectively with photographers, stock agencies, and other outside sources to license photography. Must be artistic and have an eye for photography and color to keep up with current trends and be organized and efficient with strong communication skills. Proficient in Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Ideal candidate will be up to date on current photo industry trends and understand the importance of developing and maintaining professional relationships with photographers.
Responsibilities:
• Photo edit a variety of topics including photo books, atlases, illustrated reference books, travel guides, how-to guides, narrative non-fiction titles, and various gift books.
• Doggedly pursue and research obscure concepts, source, and subject matter. Going the extra mile to obtain the most surprisingly eye-catching photography possible.
• Work with manufacturing to assure accurate color reproduction quality, being mindful of schedules and budgets.
• Gather and enter caption and credit information into appropriate database.
• Stay abreast of trends in market research that pertain to audience and buyer.
• Follow brand style guide and photo process guides to implement research for photos.
• Brainstorm ideas with editors and designers.
Basic Qualifications:
• 5 years of related experience in sourcing photographic content, with an emphasis on adult books.
• Strong picture research and editing skills in illustrated books or other print or digital medium with formats that include between 50 to 600 final images per project.
• Experience in editing down approximately 50,000 reviewed images per project from stock agencies, individual institutions and photographers, and non-traditional sources.
• Knowledge of digital file quality, printing processes and color reproduction needed for publication.
• Excellent eye for photography.
• In-depth knowledge of color correction process.
• Exceptional technical skills regarding photography, photo editing applications, and general computer and camera issues.
• Ability to speak about vision development for photographic content at creative meetings.
• Good written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Proficient in Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
• Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines on budget.
• Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
• Positive, efficient roll-up-your-sleeves attitude.
• Help pitch and develop photographic story ideas for future projects
• Develop professional relationships with photographers and industry professionals
Required Education
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in related field and experience
