Job Summary
Discovery’s rapidly growing Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) business is looking for a big-thinking, innovative, analytical leader to drive strategy for a critical segment of the business. As VP, DTC Strategy, you will lead a team responsible for developing and implementing strategy across Discovery’s global DTC portfolio focused on content and distribution, reporting to the Group SVP Content & Commercial Strategy. The right person for this role is nimble and adaptable, proactive, and has deep DTC / SVOD / streaming expertise. This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the highest priority new business initiative of Discovery, and the leader of this team will guide critical business decisions through financial, operational, and strategic analysis with high visibility to senior leadership.
Responsibilities
• Establish data-driven approach to inform and build overall content and commercial strategy to increase subscriber acquisition and retention / engagement through content and partnerships.
• Build overarching plans and strategies to meet growth objectives across original programming, content acquisition, distribution, and advanced advertising, and see those strategies through to implementation once proper buy-in and support has been secured.
• Develop frameworks for ongoing performance evaluation and optimization, particularly around content and partnerships. Develop, evaluate, and monitor DTC KPIs in partnership with BI, Finance, Central DTC Strategy, Data. Establish framework for evaluating and improving strategic initiatives against them.
• Work closely with other departments, especially Data & Analytics, Finance, Research, DTC-Business Intelligence teams, and International Strategy team to arm leadership with all the right information to guide decision-making
• Support the Content and Partnerships teams, working to identify new content categories / sources to pursue, or opportunities to expand partnerships in new ways
• Continually look for opportunities to increase the efficiency of broader DTC operations against content and partnerships
• Work in partnership with Finance teams in developing long-range plans
• Lead team in creating materials for Discovery Board meetings and other Discovery leadership meetings to drive critical decisions around such topics as content investment, content portfolio mix, windowing strategy, and partnership optimization
• Own competitive benchmarking with a particular focus on content offerings and distribution partnerships
• Build and lead the team to pursue and deliver excellence
Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree, MBA preferred
• 9 years of work experience, including Consulting, Investment Banking and/ or Corporate Strategy experience; including direct work experience at a streaming platform
• Proven track record of seeing initiatives through from conception of idea, to analysis and business plan development, gaining organizational buy-in, and partnering with teams to implement
• Strength in quantitative analysis and visual representation of data – extreme proficiency in using PowerPoint and Word to tell data-driven stories; excellent Excel skills to both build and vet others’ analyses, experience with Tableau / Microstrategy a plus
• Exceptional project management skills
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Highly collaborative and ability to demonstrate diplomacy, tact and integrity – ability to inspire, motivate, and lead cross-functional teams to achieve goals
• Comfortable in ambiguity and effective operating in a matrixed organization
• Experience building and leading high-performance teams
• Understanding of / passion for content and business development from a strategic point of view
• Must have the legal right to work in the United States
