Full Time Job
The Role
The VP, Head of Development will work with the Head of Discovery Studios. This person will manage and oversee the Discovery Studios development team and all work related to the development of original content for our slate of networks including, Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, ID, Food, HGTV, OWN and Travel. This candidate will collaboratively create original ideas, source new talent relationships both on and off camera, solicit proposals from producers and agents, develop concepts, and pitch ideas to networks.
Responsibilities
Creative
1. Generate ideas and work collaboratively with the development team
2. Take pitch meetings from outside producers, build and maintain relationships in the creative community, including talent, producers, agents and managers
3. Research and develop show ideas that originate from both internal sources and acquired pitches
4. Provide editorial oversight on projects including writing of treatments, sizzle scripts, edit notes on sizzles and paid presentations
5. Develop and enhance relationships with network executives to ensure Discovery Studios Development is on-brand and in-line with a Network’s strategic vision.
6. Stay abreast of the competitive market and entertainment marketplace
7. General understanding of Business Affairs and standard development deals.
8. Pitch concepts to networks.
9. Support the maintenance of positive relationships with network buyers and other Discovery Inc colleagues.
10. General knowledge about the technical and logistical execution of a production as well as the production management and financial side.
11. Must have a strong knowledge of and relationships with key players in the production industry, which include: emerging talent, agents, producers, etc.
Leadership
1. Must demonstrate strong leadership skills. It is imperative for this candidate to understand how to lead effectively, motivate and inspire the team to deliver a high volume of creative development on target with network needs.
2. Demonstrate diplomacy and professionalism with various levels of internal partners and clients.
3. Must posses style/attitude that projects authority and control in stressful situations
4. Maintain awareness of industry trends and keep up to date on content related needs and information.
5. Manage staff with the goal to develop career paths by providing feedback and growth opportunities.
6. An ability to communicate effectively with the creative community
Requirements
* Must have 8-10 years hands-on development and production experience in general entertainment
* Must be a strong writer and story teller
* Proven record of demonstrated creativity with an ability to generate new ideas and translate them into high-quality TV programs.
* Proficiency in TV production including creative execution, post production, economics and management.
* Ability to manage outside producers, build credibility and strong working relationships with other internal executives and generate commitment to goals.
* An independent thinker and idea-generator who is also a team player.
* Bachelor’s degree in related field or an equivalent combination of skills, training and hands-on experience
* Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong inter-personal skills
* Must have legal right to work in the United States
