Our Team
The Business & Legal Affairs department is responsible for all television business affairs and legal matters related to the acquisition and pre-broadcast review of all content used worldwide by Discovery Communications LLC's television networks. More specifically, this group negotiates and drafts acquisition, commission, co-production and talent agreements; reviews scripts and rough cuts of programs prior to broadcast in order to minimize legal exposure; analyzes media rights associated with all programming agreements; responds to usage requests made by the company's many lines of businesses; and provides advice and counsel on a wide array of production-related and legal issues such as guild, insurance, and rights clearances.
The Role
This position manages the accurate analysis and rights entry for programming and licensing deals executed across the global business and manages all rights and clearances support provided for the US and Latin American regions. This position requires an in-depth knowledge of complex media rights, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage and execute clearance projects with the support of a team.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage the rights entry workflow within the team, including training internal staff on deal interpretation and entry into the rights management system.
• Meet regularly with programming and content teams to assess needs for process improvement. Assists in forming various IP policies globally and develops ''best practices'' to facilitate a more comprehensive view of content rights.
• Provides rights management system support, including the recommendation of system enhancements and training and support to business clients across the company.
• To collaborate with key stakeholders across the company in relation to managing affiliate and partnership deals while keeping abreast of and adapting to changing business priorities.
• Oversees two or more direct reports.
Requirements
• 2 to 4 years' prior experience working at a television network, cable network, film studio, content distribution company, a law firm or similar business that specializes in entertainment/media transactions.
• Juris Doctorate required.
• Superior knowledge of media rights and experience reviewing and interpreting complex Agreements multiplatform (e.g. acquisitions, programming, distribution & third party).
• Must have media rights database experience. Specific experience working in Rights Logic is a plus.
• Candidate should have highly developed analytical skills.
• Must have strong IT skills, and Excel and database exposure.
• Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to work effectively at all levels within the company.
• Clear and concise communicator (both orally and written) - ability to present and distill legally complex matters to non-legal clients.
• Well organized with excellent attention to detail.
• Must have the legal right to work in the United States
