The Corporate Legal department is responsible for all legal matters related to DCI’s businesses and operations, worldwide. The legal department provides advice and counsel on broad range of areas including employment, retail, technology, advertising, marketing, mergers and acquisitions, commercial joint ventures, licensing, trademarks, patents, corporate operations and litigation. This department negotiates and drafts a wide array of contracts including employment agreements, independent contractor agreements, software licenses, bank loans and asset/stock purchase agreements.
The Role
Discovery is seeking a paralegal to join the IP and Litigation Legal team. This position will help manage the IP function and will report to the Manager, Intellectual Property. The incumbent will help monitor and maintain Discovery’s trademark portfolio, be actively involved in clearing marks for use and registration, and prepare and file US copyright applications for the company’s programming assets. This position requires a high level of internal interaction with staff of all levels in various regions of the company, as well as outside counsel.
Responsibilities
1. Monitor and maintain Discovery’s U.S. and foreign trademark portfolio
2. Conduct preliminary domestic and international trademark searches
3. Assist in the review and analysis of trademark search reports and watch notices
4. Prepare and file trademark applications and renewals with the USPTO
5. Communicate with internal business units with respect to trademark matters
6. Coordinate with outside counsel with respect to filing and prosecution of foreign trademark applications and enforcement matters
7. Prepare, file and maintain US Copyright applications
8. Research infringement complaints and respond to same
9. Track status of cease and desist and similar correspondence for compliance
10. Provide paralegal support in the area of anti-piracy
11. Provide paralegal support related to patent prosecution efforts and a patent program
Requirements
* Minimum of five years of experience in trademark clearance, prosecution, and enforcement in-house or with a law firm
* Experience with an entertainment/media company a plus
* Ability to work independently
* Sound knowledge of domestic and international trademark and copyright laws
* Experience in preparing and filing copyright applications with US Copyright Office
* Proficiency with MS Office and various online trademark search databases, including Compumark and Corsearch
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Demonstrated attention to detail
* Strong organizational skills
* Strong analytic skills
* Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
* Team player
* Bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate desired
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States
