The Role
The Distribution Staff Engineer is part of a team that ensures the operation, maintenance, specifications, and performance of our world-class teleport can deliver the highest standard of reliability to our affiliates for all our Discovery programming. In this 24/7/365 operation, you’ll monitor, maintain, and operate the satellite uplink systems, fiber distribution systems, multiplexes, and affiliate receive systems for Discovery services at both the broadcast origination facility and disaster recovery location. You’ll also lead projects that support design and development engineering activities on a global scale within a collaborative engineering workflow environment.
Responsibilities
1. Provide engineering technical support for Discovery owned teleports & 3rd Party locations, projects, programs, and initiatives.
2. Lead technical resolution when performing emergency restoral actions on ground station equipment, including: up converters, down converters, HPA's, fiber optic subsystems, LNA/LNB's, antennas, IP and baseband equipment (modems, multiplexers, DVB and Broadband technology platforms) and video systems.
3. Provide guidance to others on applicable technologies, ground station equipment, operational and maintenance procedures, and providing technical training on equipment.
4. Serve as technical lead in operating and maintaining a wide variety of ground station equipment and communication systems.
5. Serve as assigned engineer for analysis, design, development, and implementation activities.
6. Lead in the installation, testing and successful turn-up of new systems & services, installing and configuring equipment, associated wiring and cabling, and administrative requirements.
7. Complete preventative and periodic maintenance checks of ground station equipment and associated sub-systems, review historical data for anomalies and take appropriate action to correct.
8. Determine proper methods for testing equipment and RF/IF systems chains and interpret the results to verify normal/abnormal conditions of equipment.
9. Proactively monitor the conditions of all Discovery multiplexes.
Requirements
* 2 years of experience working at an earth/ground station preferred.
* Experience in RF and transmission systems is preferred as well as experience with Domestic and International Television Satellite distribution and compression systems.
* Have in-depth knowledge of systems level architecture and ground station equipment as well as knowledge of Satellite Earth Station technologies.
* Must have working knowledge of RF theory, and basic electronics, with specific expertise of major systems to include: antenna drive systems, High Power Amplifiers, Up/Down Converters, Fiber Optic sub-systems, Baseband (modems, multiplexers, Broadband and IP technologies) and Video technologies/systems.
* Ability to operate test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, power meters, synthesized generators, video wave form meters, multimeters, network analyzers, and bit error rate test sets.
* Have the drive and passion to learn new technologies, understand intricate technical concepts and make informed decisions.
* Computer literacy, excellent oral and written communication abilities, and close attention to details are required.
* Ability to understand system drawings and signal flows. AutoCAD skills a plus.
* Ability to lift heavy equipment as needed.
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States.

This role is considered an essential position. This means that during times of inclement weather, emergencies, or when access to the workplace may be impeded, employees in this position are expected to report to work to support business continuance, unless otherwise instructed by his/her direct manager. Overnights, weekends, holiday coverage and rotating shifts may be required.
