The Role
The Director of Global Content Systems watches over the portfolio of products built and maintained by the Content Systems teams. The Director serves as the ombudsman for our products to our customers and to the teams managing connected products in our content ecosystem. They are the face of our product to most of our users and colleagues. The Director manages the work of individual Product Owners and their Business Analysts, ensuring that the development of our applications and features aligns with Discovery’s strategic goals and the needs of our customers. The Director works closely with Architecture and Engineering resources in our team, collaborating to turn customer and product requirements into Agile epics, stories, and features that our teams can build and test. The Director is an effective communicator who is equally at ease when speaking to customers, executives, or engineers.
Responsibilities
1. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with our customers
2. Act as a product evangelist within Discovery, making users aware of new features
3. Create materials to guide the work of our teams (Epic documentation, business process flows, etc)
4. Develop and share a clear product strategy and roadmap with our leadership, our colleagues, and our teams
5. Manage Product Owners and Business Analysts as they define and develop functional requirements for all products within our portfolio
6. Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of how our users interact with the products in our portfolio, including their business processes and dependencies
7. Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of how our products connect with other products in the Content ecosystem at Discovery
8. Facilitate communication between Development, Analysis, and Testing groups within the software development teams
9. Monitor the processes and communications of our teams, working with team leaders to refine our development process as needed. Monitor team chemistry and fit, constantly working to improve team dynamics
10. Maintain backlog and prioritized roadmap for all products in the portfolio
11. Assist Product Owners, Analysts and the Production Support Team with analysis of major production issues including problem identification, implementation of short-term work around and coordination of long-term software solution with development team.
12. Mentor and develop other team members. Support efforts to cross-train staff to ensure proper redundancy and growth opportunities.
13. Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
* 10 years of experience in software design, project management, or product management
* Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration, related field, or equivalent experience
* Deep understanding of the software lifecycle process and software development
* Experience leading Agile teams as a Scrum Master, Product Owner, or Project Manager
* Ability to manage multiple, concurrent initiatives - with varying levels of priority – and to produce deliverables on-time and within budget
* Ability to quickly learn key concepts and apply concepts when identifying solutions
* Ability to develop and execute simple SQL queries to produce ad hoc reports, analyze business data
* Strong proficiencies in MS Visio, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and general design and project management disciplines
* Willingness to work weekends in support of software releases
* Hands-on experience working with common television production and post production tools, file-based workflows, and media asset management systems
* Experience and basic competency in a general-purpose programming language (Python, JavaScript, Ruby)
* Must be willing to travel as required, spending between 20-40 days per year on business travel
* Must have the legal right to work in the United States
