Our Team
The Business & Legal Affairs department is responsible for all television business affairs and legal matters related to the acquisition and pre-broadcast review of all content used worldwide by Discovery’s television networks. The department negotiates and drafts acquisition, commission, co-production, and talent agreements; reviews scripts and rough cuts of programs prior to broadcast to minimize legal exposure; analyzes media rights associated with all programming agreements; responds to usage requests made by the company’s many lines of businesses; and provides advice and counsel on a wide array of production-related and legal issues such as guild, insurance, and rights clearances.
The Role
Seasoned leader with expertise in the footage industry to support Discovery’s worldwide content distribution initiatives. The role will lead the company’s footage services team and be responsible for leveraging the company’s owned footage library by placing the footage in long and short form commissioned programs as well as the company’s external facing footage licensing website where footage is licensed to television producers, movie studios, and other groups requesting footage.
Responsibilities
1. Direct all aspects of the licensing of footage from Discovery’s owned footage archives to internal and external footage users.
2. Review the footage delivery process and implement process improvements that will enable delivery of the footage in a more efficient manner.
3. Collaborate with internal program directors to select footage for use in the company’s commissioned content thereby reducing program expenses and ensuring the program does not contain footage restrictions.
4. Oversee the company’s external facing footage licensing website, Discovery Access, which is used to license footage to external entities.
5. Provide strategic guidance for the type of content placed on Discovery Access and the metadata structure to be used on the site.
6. Stay abreast of industry trends related to footage licensing and make sure the company is offering high-value footage on Discovery Access.
7. Direct the daily duties and project initiatives for the Footage Services Specialists on the team.
8. Supervise footage projects from start to finish including determining content needs, researching content, and soliciting support from peer group and services to successfully complete the project.
9. Selection of footage (i.e., take raw source footage and decide what footage is repurposed)
10. Any other duties as determined by the supervisor.
Requirements
* A proven skill base covering the above functions would be a key advantage.
* 5 years of experience leading a team in the footage/still image stock house industry or a similar industry.
* Must have a deep understanding of the content licensing sales process and a knowledge of marketplace needs and competitors.
* Solid grasp of the fundamentals of intellectual property
* Must have strong IT skills and be comfortable with databases, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively at all levels within the company.
* Clear and concise communicator (both orally and written) and able to summarize complex information.
* Well organized with excellent attention to detail.
* Able to motivate team members for best performance and prioritize projects in a fast-paced environment.
* Strong commitment to enacting process improvement initiatives throughout the supply chain delivery process for footage.
* Excellent presentation and sales skills.
* Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment on multiple projects and stay calm under pressure.
