Founded in 2007, Japan Day @ Central Park is an annual event designed by the Japanese community of New York to promote a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and to say ''Thank you, New York!'' Japan Day @ Central Park is organized with the following three missions in mind:
1. To show the local Japanese community's appreciation toward their home city, New York.
2. To build bridges of cultural understanding between the people of Japan and the U.S.
3. To facilitate stronger grass-roots connections within the local Japanese community.
The event kicks off with the rousing Japan Run, a 4-mile mini-marathon including Kids' Races, hosted by New York Road Runners. The event continues with the Japan Day Festival featuring a wide range of Japanese traditional and family-friendly activities, free samplings of popular Japanese cuisine, and powerful stage performances throughout the day.
Responsibilities and Duties
Volunteer Coordinator
Contact Corporate/Group/Individual volunteers and maintain communications with them
Provide guidance and support to volunteers and staff involved in event planning and execution
Conduct volunteer orientation to provide detailed event overviews and detailed guidelines for each tent
Supervise and oversee volunteer activities on the day of event
Tent Coordinator
Contact potential Corporate/Group exhibitors and maintain communications with them
Hold multiple meetings with the exhibitors to discuss the contents of their tents
Create tent layout and timeline for exhibitors
Monitor event timelines and ensure that those timelines and deadlines are satisfied
Supervise and oversee each tent activity on the day of event
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 1-3 years of relevant work experience in an administration or coordinating position
Very good command of Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Ability to thrive in a demanding environment with multitasking competencies
Demonstrated excellent organizational and time management skills, with special attention to detail
Ability to successfully lead teams or work groups through the planning and implementation of events and special activities, as well as to present information effectively in one-on-one, small group and large group settings
Strong time management, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
Bilingual Japanese/English candidates strongly preferred
Interest in Japanese culture is a plus
