The Job
WarnerMedia seeks a Writer for the CNN department.
CNN's coverage of wellness and healthy lifestyle choices is found in our high-quality, cross-platform editorial offerings. We cover a broad range of topics from a global perspective through content and product initiatives aimed toward a highly engaged audience. Our goal is to aid our readers in making smart health choices as well as cope and thrive in a constantly changing world. Specifically, CNN has launched a new Wellness-led editorial brand – Life, But Better – as an essential source for information and tools that inspire and challenge us to lead better lives. We're searching for a Writer who can contribute to this broad, exciting and evolving journalist imperative.
The Writer will work closely with Wellness and other Features editors to pitch and write assigned news, features, enterprise, newsletters and other content across a variety of wellness topic areas.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer and a deep source of creative concepts and ideas that will push CNN's storytelling forward.
When it comes to breaking news and trending stories, this person is comfortable with reaching out to various departments and sources for quotes and statements in order to produce stories quickly and accurately. They must also demonstrate a talent for longer form deep enterprise reporting and narrative storytelling.
The position requires the candidate to work self-sufficiently and show good independent editorial judgment, but also effectively communicate with editors and other teams and partners.
The Daily
• Pitch ideas and write compelling and original stories that adhere to CNN's editorial mission, especially its Wellness initiatives
• Demonstrate a deep curiosity about wellness and healthy lifestyle topics (fitness, food, sleep, relationships, mindfulness, etc)
• Research and develop information sources and build upon a reliable source network.
• Be accountable for assigned content, from reporting, writing, production and publication and through, in some cases, ongoing refreshes and updates
• Help ensure the optimum performance of editorial by refining headlines, tease images and social language
• Work closely with Programming teams to ensure the flow and maximum performance of our content around the site and on social networks
• Write a variety of story types, including developing multimedia ideas and product initiatives. Consistently meet agreed upon deadlines
• Produce content in various management systems (CMS, newsletters, etc)
• Reporting research, sometimes for other writers and projects. Factchecking of one's own stories and possibly others
• Edit others' work on occasion and develop editing skills
The Essential
• College degree in journalism or related fields
• 3-5 years of writing experience with a media organization
• Strong understanding of the writing mechanics of news and other types of storytelling
• Excellent writing and research skills
• Strong editorial judgement
• Ability to work a fast paced 24h/7 news environment
