Responsibilities
Overview:
The Digital Deputy Editor works at the heart of the EMEA editorial team, updating the global site, as well as assigning and editing stories, market updates, features and online video, all on tight deadlines.
Responsibilities:
Act as a hotseat for CNBC.com, updating the site using strong editorial judgment to serve a readership that wants timely information on investing, money, business, economics, technology and trade.
Manage fluid breaking news situations with an attention to detail, and with the utmost integrity and dedication to factual accuracy.
Copy edit stories, slideshows and video captions with precision on tight deadlines. Do so in alignment with CNBC's high editorial standards, without political or personal bias, and acting as a resilient guard against manipulation by external PR professionals.
Deputize for the Digital News Editor.
Write stories on a variety of subjects, including financial markets and money, sometimes on a ''quick turn'' basis without the benefit of an editor who can immediately assist.
Ensure the smooth running of the website, including updating of main European and Asian pages with headlines and breaking news. Curate the website by selecting the best, most important stories over the course of the day.
Produce stories in a proprietary content management system in a fast and timely manner.
Assign work to other writers and coordinate production to ensure website is updated at all times.
Add value to CNBC.com stories by incorporating best practices with regard to search engine optimization (SEO), and appropriating tagging, videos, story links, slideshows, graphics etc.
Remain in close communication with television producers to ensure coordination on stories.
Monitor the performance of CNBC.com's content using analytics tools.
Ensure CNBC.com's content is given the maximum exposure on social media such as Twitter.
Qualifications
/Requirements
Requirements:
In-depth understanding of financial markets, with knowledge of stocks, bonds, commodities and more complex derivatives. A strong interest in markets, trade and economics is a must.
Strong copy-editing skills under tight deadlines, especially the ability to spot mistakes, errors and typos. Excellent verbal communication skills, coupled with strong research and succinct writing skills.
Experience commissioning and editing stories from reporters in a fast-paced news environment.
Enthusiasm for news and digital storytelling.
Previous experience in updating a website, hotseating or hot-desking, with either a wire service, a website, or similar. Ability to multi-task and remain calm in a fast-paced news environment.
Understanding of global financial markets and how events in different economies and markets can affect each other.
Ability to work in a team and across all departments and locations, ensuring a smooth
running web site that is 100% accurate.
Demonstrated self-starter, with the confidence to make decisions quickly in a fast-paced news environment.
Demonstrated understanding of internet technologies, web design and production environments, video editing and video asset management tools.
Fluency in English.
Flexibility in working shifts, some of which start very early in the morning or on weekends.
Desired characteristics:
Regional knowledge of the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa.
Experience working in content management systems.
An understanding of search engine optimization (SEO).
Experience of working for a leading wire service or business news website.
