Full Time Job
Department: Field Operations
Job Title: Grounds Supervisor
Reports To: Head Groundskeeper
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Supervise the grounds crew in preparation and maintenance of the playing field
• Supervise and train grounds crew
• Record maintenance of chemical applications
• Train grounds crew in the proper use of equipment, tools, chemicals, and their applications
• Schedule staff and supervise their activities
• Ensure that the playing field meets MLB standards
• Able to work rotating 24 hour shifts to remove snow and ice from county property
• Able to work special events independently and make decisions that affect field conditions
• Become an active member with local and national chapters of the SportsTurf Managers Association including committee service, speaking opportunities, and Certification when eligible
• Participate in all training/certifications as mandated by the Reds and Ballpark Operations
• Additional duties as assigned
Experience, Education and Licensure
Bachelor's degree in Turf Management, Horticulture, or Plant Science required. Three to five years experience maintaining high performance baseball fields. Employee is required to have three to five years experience operating and maintaining an irrigation system including valve and head maintenance. Employee must have, or be able to pass, Ohio Applicators License test with category 8 endorsement
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Have an extensive knowledge and experience performing mound, plate, and field preparation. Must have experience in the construction and care of a playing field. Good customer service skills in responding to requests. Must have the ability to establish workload priorities and manage a diverse workload. Employee must have ability to work independently, with minimal supervision. They must have the ability to inspect own work for accuracy and to adhere to applicable policies of the work area. Effectively work with other employees and contractors using excellent interpersonal communication skills. Must have the ability to respond with a sense of urgency and work effectively and productively. Ability to respond to daily pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to adapt to changing priorities. Ability to plan, and organize work effectively and balance multiple projects. Ability to learn new methods, processes, and policies. Ability and willingness to comply with all safety rules, policies, and procedures, including biohazard and other regulatory requirements. Employee must be proficient in basic computer skills required to use Micro Soft Office Suite and our HRIS employee software.
Special Requirement:
The employee must be physically capable of moving about the Great American Ballpark facility including construction work sites and under adverse field and weather conditions. Employee must have the ability to work 24 hour rotating shifts to clear snow and ice from county property.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Sprinkler and irrigation systems; tractor, lawn mower, sweeper, blower and injection equipment; parking lot sweepers; snow blowers; electronic distance measuring devices; motor vehicles; phone; mobile radio.
Physical Demands:
The employee must be willing to work long hours and a variable schedule including weekends and holidays especially during MLB season. They must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in outdoor settings. While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
