JOB TITLE: Manager, Media Relations
DEPARTMENT: Media Relations
REPORTS TO: Director, Media Relations
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
ROLE
The successful candidate will assist the Director of Media Relations with the planning and implementation of a proactive, comprehensive communications operation for the club. In this role, the Manager of Media Relations will need to develop relationships with key local, national and international media and will be responsible for driving positive earned media coverage. The position will be responsible for designing, writing and editing the club's annual media information guide and postseason guide/season in review, as well as assisting with press releases and the team's daily game notes. Represents the club on approximately 50 percent of the road trips, handling media relations duties in visiting cities. Compiles present-day and historical information needed to answer fans and media's questions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Compile, update and design daily game notes for Spring Training and regular season games.
• Design, write and edit the club's annual media information guide as well as the team's postseason guide/Season in Review.
• Travel to Spring Training (approximately seven weeks) and accompany the team on approximately 50 percent of the regular season road trips, handling media relations duties in the visiting cities.
• Serve as a liaison between the Cubs and the team's rightsholders, Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score, assisting with interview requests and providing guidance on content.
• Compose and report press release information to local and national media.
• Represent the club as an official spokesperson when distributing information.
• Collaborate with Cubs business-side departments to identify and accomplish objectives. Closely work with business communications, marketing and social media, sponsorship, community affairs, Cubs Productions and ballpark operations.
• Answer statistical and general questions asked by media and fans.
• Perform special statistical projects as needed for the President, General Manager and the field manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Undergraduate degree in communications, journalism or public relations, or equivalent related experience.
• 3-5 years experience working for a professional sports team in media relations. Previous travel as a team media relations representative is preferred.
• Understanding of the organization's history, the sport's history and an in-depth statistical knowledge of the game.
• Must have a good working knowledge of computer software and hardware, specifically InDesign and Photoshop.
• Understanding of the media.
• Demonstrated excellent communication and organizational skills.
