Assignment Editor (CBS WFOR)
CBS WFOR-TV in Miami has an immediate opening for a dynamic hardworking experienced Assignment Editor. Responsibilities:
• Determine news assignments based upon event of the day including monitoring law enforcement frequencies and fire frequencies on newsroom scanners for spot news
• Meet deadlines in high stress breaking news situations
• Generate and develop enterprise story ideas, develop impactful, varied community partner relationships and contacts, and participate in editorial discussions
• Monitor multiple platforms and maintain updated files for ongoing stories. Collaboration with Producers and Field Journalists is paramount
• Telephone law enforcement and fire-fighting agencies to learn if spot news must be assigned
• Check wires for on air bulletins or special reports and new story assignments
• Prepare a situationer describing in detail what stories are being covered, who is covering them, and approximately how much airtime is required for each story
• Gather information by telephone on news stories which are not assigned to reporters; participate in story meetings to inform participants of events being covered
• Schedule remote trucks (ENG/SNG) for live news stories or interviews; develop contacts in community and cultivate those contacts for news stories
Preferred Education
, Experience, and Certification Requirements:
• BA degree in Journalism preferred
• 2 years of experience in the newsroom preferred
• Knowledge of television broadcasting and familiarity with South Florida area. Strong news judgment, organizational and planning skills
• Strong tech skills
• Familiarity with Accurint and Lexis databases; CMS systems and Grass Valley/Stratus server and edit software is a plus
• Must have basic ability to write for digital or broadcast platforms
• Possess the ability to respond quickly, calmly, and expertly to deadlines, changing circumstances and breaking news; must be able to quickly prioritize and make decisions requiring critical thinking and independent judgment
• Willing to work a flexible work schedule
