The Political Director helps guide political coverage across the CBS News landscape. Based in Washington DC, the Director is responsible for helping to develop the overall strategy for political coverage and implementing that strategy in coordination with the broadcasts and all platforms at CBS News. This position is closely involved in guiding decisions related to major political events, including debates, Super Tuesday, the conventions and ultimately Election Night. While the Political Director is the external point of contact for campaigns, ideally, he/she has a wide network of relationships in DC and the world of politics at large to help facilitate external engagement opportunities and partnerships.
Responsibilities:
• Recruit and lead a staff that varies from a core of two or three people in the off years to one or two dozen during presidential campaigns, including campaign and political embeds (Digital Journalists) and producers assigned to staffing political desks in NY and Washington DC.
• For the Midterm elections, identify both the key races and districts that will determine the outcome of elections and which party controls the House and the Senate.
• Determine the key political trends and crosscurrents in the country that help the public understand the issues of the day and the political process.
• Guide Producers and Editors at CBS News on how best to cover the political candidates and trends.
• Monitor campaign fundraising, spending, ad buys and activity on social media.
• Develop sources in both parties, forging partnerships with other news organizations where useful.
• Design a comprehensive reporting and technical training program to prepare the political embeds whose reporting will provide political coverage across all News platforms
• Ensure the editorial integrity of the embedded Digital Journalists while keeping an eye on the quality of the daily video content they produce.
• Organize editorial research on the candidates and issues as well as coordinating all incoming video feeds in an archive system in both NY and Washington.
• For the general election, identify the key issues, battleground states and districts, constituencies that might be in play, and determine which candidates are gathering or losing momentum as the campaigns evolve over the course of the year
• Partner with our Polling unit on monitoring and reporting on the political pulse of the country
• Work collaboratively across the News organization to ensure proper promotion of our political coverage
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Journalism, Political Science, Mass Communications or related field
• A minimum of 6 years' experience covering or working on congressional or presidential level political campaigns or a minimum of 5 years of political journalism experience
• Established experience at the Senior Producer level in television journalism preferred
• Demonstrated editorial experience and judgement in political reporting
• A robust list of political contacts at all levels of the political spectrum
• Demonstrated management skills to include an understanding of the budgeting process and the nuances of leading a staff in a dynamic, deadline driven environment
• Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Must be able to work collaboratively with stakeholders at various levels of the organization
• Must be able to juggle multiple and sometimes competing priorities
