THE ROLE
The Office of the Chief Legal Officer at Creative Artists Agency (CAA) provides dedicated legal support in the areas of litigation, corporate transactions, compliance, advice and counseling, and governmental affairs. We support CAA's needs when it comes to commercial, talent agency and employment laws, among other legal areas.
CAA's employment law team plays an important compliance role at CAA, by advising Human Resources and business leaders, developing policies and procedures, identifying risks and advising on risk management.
Every member of CAA's legal team is expected to be a values-driven, results-oriented leader who provides legal services with the highest level of professionalism, competence and efficacy. The Employee Relations Investigator is a full-time position, and will report to the Deputy General Counsel. As part of our team, The Employee Relations Investigator will conduct neutral, time-sensitive, important and sometimes-complex workplace investigations. The Employee Relations Investigator will be expected to interview witnesses, review documents, analyze large amounts of information, communicate clearly and effectively (verbally and in writing), and make factual determinations. Upon completing an investigation, the Employee Relations Investigator will prepare a report in order to present the findings to stakeholders. You must be a curious self-starter with the ability to work independently and to work proactively with various teams across the organization. You must be confident, have a growth mindset, and possess exceptional interpersonal skills. You should be clear, professional and concise in your verbal and written communications. You should be very organized and capable of effectively prioritizing multiple tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manage investigative processes for employee complains and other concerns, including allegations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, bullying and other inappropriate behavior.
• Conduct fair, prompt and thorough investigations, including doing any legal research, interviewing witnesses (in person and remotely), reviewing documents, engaging in credibility
assessments, analyzing information, making factual determinations, reporting findings verbally and in writing, and informing participants of the outcome of the investigation.
• From time to time, supervise others who may need to conduct investigations (including human resources professionals or outside investigators engaged by the company).
• Write investigation-related documents (e.g., interview notes, factual findings, correspondence).
• Prepare an investigation report (and other attendant summaries) following the completion of each investigation.
• Communicate status updates, as well as rationale for investigation approach and outcome, to stakeholders. Be able to maintain confidentiality.
• Stay attuned to workplace investigation trends and advise the company on best practices.
• Continuously learn about new laws, compliance requirements and investigation best practices.
• Demonstrate high ethical standards, excellent professional judgement and exceptional emotional intelligence.
• Apply in-depth understanding of company policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal employment laws and regulations to identify and analyze issues; apply critical thinking and decision-making skills to make determinations.
• Work as part of a team, with heavy emphasis on collaboration and communication.
• Demonstrate learning agility and adaptability; be able to improve and evolve investigative approaches, systems or strategies when necessary.
• Encourage others to value varying perspectives when working in diverse teams.
• Travel and other duties, as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Law degree (J.D. or foreign equivalent) required.
• Licensed member in good standing of the California State Bar and/or certification from Association of Workplace Investigators.
• At least five (5) years of legal, employee relations, human resources or workplace investigation experience, including substantial experience in a large, multi-state organization.
• Strong working knowledge of employment laws and the ability to appropriately spot legal issues.
• High degree of empathy with the ability to conduct difficult conversations in a calm and effective manner.
• Exceptional verbal and written communications.
• Ability to organize, analyze, summarize and communicate complex or voluminous information.
• Ability to manage multiple on-going investigations by multi-tasking and prioritizing tasks effectively.
• Ability to work quickly without compromising accuracy or attention to detail.
• Naturally curious, unafraid to ask probing questions, and high social intelligence.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
• Mental Functions: Decisions have major implications on the management and operations of an area within a department. Job may contribute to important strategy, operational, and business decisions that affect the department. This position requires analysis, comprehension and decision-making with an aim of attaining specific goals.
• Physical Functions: Sitting required 85% of the time. Walking and standing required 15% of the time respectively. No heavy lifting required. Constant working on a computer, telephone and/or mobile device, including but not limited to iPad or cellular phone.
