Billboard: Staff Writer, Awards
COVID-19 HIRING UPDATE: We have transitioned to a remote work model and are continuing to hire during this time. This role is expected to begin as a remote position. We appreciate this is unprecedented times and will work closely with you, taking into account your individual circumstances.
Billboard is hiring an Awards Staff Writer to join our newsrooms in either NYC or LA.
With a renowned authority among artists, fans and the industry, Billboard powers the ultimate global music destination and magazine, featuring unrivaled reporting on music news, issues and trends, and the industry's definitive charts.
The awards beat focuses on the many music-oriented award shows, not just the major, all-genre shows (the Grammys, the American Music Awards), but also genre-specific shows (the CMT Music Awards, the GMA Dove Awards). Often, these genre-specific shows get the ball rolling for an artist or a particular recording.
Our overarching goal is to cover award shows with the same energy and obsessive zeal with which we cover the Billboard charts. If something interesting, unusual, unprecedented or surprising happens on the awards beat, we want to write about it.
We write news stories, analysis stories, feature stories, list-type stories and prediction pieces, showcased in a weekly Awards Watch newsletter. The goal is to cover each show with creativity and intelligence; to tell readers something they don't already know and can't get anywhere else (if only because no one else will take the time to do the research). The Awards Staff Writer will spend an hour researching a fact that might turn into one sentence that no one else will have.
We regard press releases as a useful starting point, but not more than that. We expect even knowledgeable people, experts in the field, to pick up information from reading our stories that they didn't already know.
We are seeking a keen attention to detail because there are literally dozens of award shows each year, many with dozens of categories. We also cover the various organizations that bestow these awards, such as the Recording Academy and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which make news apart from their awards and nominations. Both are very active currently on race and equity initiatives, which we cover. We cover their top executive hires, board elections, alignments with other organizations, etc.
The candidate will also help drive conversation around awards shows on Billboard's social media channels and must be adept at engaging on various social platforms.
When applying, tell us about you, why you became a journalist and what responsibilities and challenges you would expect in this position. We will be reviewing clips that you provide so please make sure you are supplying us with those stories you are most proud of…and tell us why.
